Sunday Supper

Hello and welcome to my first post of NaBloPoMo 2015. I managed it last year with a minimum of whining, so it seems like a worthwhile challenge to try this year. Sundays are going to be for Sunday Supper, and while I'm not talking specifically about food today, it's definitely food-related.

Ryan's birthday was in October, and I spent a long time thinking about good gifts for him. Like most other 25-year olds, he can always use money, but deserves some much more personal gifts. Then it came to me; what young man wouldn't love his own recipe box? ;-)

My grandmother used this old oak box when she was teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. It's been sitting empty in my kitchen for many years, but once I had the recipe box idea I knew just what to use. Going through my own recipe file and copying Ryan's favorites took some time, but part of a good gift involves giving of yourself and your time. I was also on the receiving end, as I recalled many happy family memories while I was rewriting recipes.

I think he enjoyed the gift and appreciated the "family heirloom" box. I intend to add to it with new recipes that I think Ryan will enjoy, and this one may be the first I send after we try it for our Sunday Supper today. My nephew has proclaimed this as "one of the best meals, EVER!!!!!", and I can't resist recipes that combine some of my favorite ingredients (even if they may be decidedly unhealthy!)

I hope everyone gets to enjoy their own delicious version of Sunday Supper, no matter what that may be for you. I'd love to hear what's for supper at your house today!

  2. That's so wonderful! My aunt sent me some of her favorite recipes (I love running across them in my recipe file, her distinctive handwriting) and, along with the "my first tool box" from boyfriend at the time... best and most appreciated gifts ever!!

  3. Having a recipe box with mom's handwritten recipes is a fabulous treasure. It's a very thoughtful gift for a mother to give. Good choice, Bonny!

  9. what a wonderful gift! I treasure every single recipe card in my mom's or grandmothers' handwriting... even those I wrote myself at age 13 or 16. (and kielbasa stew sounds like a winner!)
