Unraveled Wednesday: 3/22/23

I'm happy to join Kat and fellow Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday, with a second completed Sophie shawl.

I took this photo on the gate to the park across from my house, and it turned into a small event. I heard quite a bit of yelling from middle schoolers walking home, and two of them had to stop dribbling their basketballs and ask, "Whatcha doin' lady?" When I explained that I was taking a picture of my knitting they must have decided I was a crazy old lady and kept on going. The crossing guard even had to walk over and wonder what I was doing. Who knew taking a picture of knitting would create such excitement? But I think I'm done knitting Sophies and glad to get back to neglected Hitchhikers.

I want to work more on my current Hitchhiker so I can possibly photograph it in the park when the flowering cherry trees are blooming in a few weeks. This is what it looks like now:

I finished a couple of average books this week, but one stood out. The three-star books were Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers and The Golden Spoon. They were easy entertainment but they weren't much more than that. The stand out was The Queen of Dirt Island which had lovely prose, a delightful setting, and wonderful character development. I wish it had been longer!

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. With all the strange things that Instagrammers and TikTokers do these days, I would think that taking a photo of a piece of knitting would be the least weird thing people would see! But regardless, the shawl is lovely. The current Hitchhiker reminds me of pastel Easter candy, so it feels very seasonally appropriate.

  2. I love the "Whatcha Ya Doin' Lady?" LOL And, I love the picture of your Sophie Shawl hanging on the gate - that will be such a nice setting for your Hitchhiker which reminds me of Pez candies!! I'm just under halfway through "The Queen of Dirt Island" and really enjoying it.

  3. I agree with Vera... I just love that "whatcha doin' lady?" is just perfect! That is a lovely Sophie! It looks so soft and warm!

I agree, your pastel Hitchhiker will look perfect with a backdrop of flowering trees! :)

I am not much enjoying Bomb Shelter (thanks to insomnia I read a good bit of it last night!) But I am on the wait list for The Queen of Dirt Island!

  4. I wonder what kind of stir you will cause . . . when you pose your newly-finished hitchhiker among the cherry blossoms!!! How do you like your Sophie Shawl, now that it's finished? Is it lovely to wear??? It seems like a great thing to have in your winter wardrobe! XO

  5. We definitely get stares when we try to photography our knitting in the "wild". I once wrapped an alligator statue in a shawl. I attracted lots of attention ...........from the Orlando police. Apparently someone called me in. Thankfully, they got a good laugh out of it.

Reading: Lessons in Chemistry and enjoying it VERY much.

  8. All the times I've photo'd FOs in public (even in a NYC subway station!) no one has EVER said a word ... I hope you get those pretty blooms to show off that soon-to-be-finished Hitchhiker!

  9. What a lovely Sophie Shawl. Just think, maybe some middle-schooler will go home and tell their mother they want to learn to knit. I love that kids would ask instead of just hurrying past. I have The Queen of Dirt Island on my list. It's always fun to read and talk about books.
