... is a day to plant seeds.
I actually planted a few types (green peppers, hot peppers, and Napa cabbage) 7-10 days ago and put in three types of tomatoes and swiss chard today. They don't look like much so far, but the cabbage seeds have germinated. Since John can hardly bear to thin seeds after he plants them in the garden, I'm planting fewer seeds and I'll thin them in the pots. This will just give John the actual plants we have room for in the garden and we'll hopefully avoid a tomato jungle this year.
Nice! fletch has been busy planting too: a variety of lettuces in the raised bed box that has a cold frame top when necessary; some radish seeds; and we have some cherry tomato seeds that have sprouted inside. It's almost time!!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me excited to see seeds starting! I hope to start mine when we get back -- I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the roller-coaster weather pattern we've been on will finally even out in April!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect way to celebrate a Monday . . . that also happens to be the Vernal Equinox! XO
ReplyDeleteI do love nappa cabbage!! My sister and dad do lots of gardening and I take after my mom (not a gardener) but I will eat what people give me from their gardens!!
ReplyDeleteOh I love that. I wish I was a grower. I have a few house plants I try to keep alive and that pretty much the extent of it.
ReplyDeleteMy list this week includes some planning for container gardening... which I loved last year! It's perfect for my solo gardening... very manageable! But I love your seed starts! XO
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those people who can't bear to thin plants! It's so dumb, but there we are! ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's not exactly dumb, but we end up with a tomato jungle every year. I can't even get into the center of it to harvest the tomatoes that have dropped to the ground. I'm a bit more ruthless when it comes to thinning!
DeleteYour 'saying' might have to be made into a sign for my vegetable garden. I'm sooo nervous about things growing this year (my first year gardening!).
ReplyDeleteWe've been planting a garden for 10 or 15 years and are still experimenting, and I wish you all the best! (We do have a sign that says "grow, dammit" which may also be appropriate.)
DeleteI've been growing a variety of microgreens & mesculun mixes under grow lights this winter. It's been so nice to have fresh greens for a winter salad. I hope to plant these outside in containers as soon as it warms up a bit...but not too much! Good luck with your garden this year!
ReplyDeleteYour fresh greens grown under lights sounds like a wonderful idea! And I'm with you on the warming up a bit but not too much. (I'm afraid that soon I'll be complaining that it's too hot.)
DeleteThat's awesome! Dale and I were just discussing the heartbreak of thinning plants!
ReplyDeleteoooooh, you know I garden vicariously through you (and John?) ... and I'm delighted to see napa cabbage!
ReplyDeleteHooray for planting those seeds. Spring is on the way. The tomato jungle makes me smile. I always set out to not have so many tomato plants but then they come in a six-pack and I think well one or two more won't hurt. And then I've lost control again. However, no one has ever turned down the gift of a home-grown tomato.
