Unraveled Wednesday: 3/15/23

I'm happy to join Kat and fellow Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday. Winter has made a reappearance and my yarn scale finally told me it was time to start decreasing, so I've been working on the Sophie shawl.

It snowed yesterday and the winds were gusting to 40 mph so I took a picture indoors. I'm wearing my blue alpaca Sophie shawl around my neck and this off-white one is on my lap while I knit, so I'm warm and happy.

Reading has slowed down a bit but I better get going because my pile is growing. I finished The Shipping News in preparation for our Read With Us discussion next week. I'm not a big re-reader, but this book has stood up to three readings for me, and I discover new things each time. I've started The Queen of Dirt Island by Donal Ryan (delightful so far), and have Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers ready to start and a pre-publication copy of The Secret Book of Flora Lea to finish. An embarrassment of riches in the book department!

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Great knitting and reading are the things that keep me sane during a return to winter week! I have added the new Donal Ryan book to my TBR list! Thank you!

  2. I have a feeling that your shawl will be done by the next time we see it! I think we're going to have a really fun discussion about The Shipping News.

  3. Lovely knitting! I am hoping to finish a shawl and then focus on a sweater for me :)

  4. Re-reading The Shipping News (and not remembering a thing about it) makes me want to read another book by Annie Proulx. What a bunch of quirky characters! Thanks for the book ideas - I plan to start Dirt Island today and Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice looks like a hoot. Also the Secret Book of Flora Lea sounds good to me. I'm knitting pi socks (and would love to bake a pie!!). Your Sophie shawl is looking good. Our winds are still crazy strong today.

  5. I hope you are enjoying the snow, Bonny! (And I hope it doesn't stick around for long, and you'll soon be able to enjoy the spring.) So glad you reached the turnaround point on your Sophie shawl -- it's all downhill from there. :-)

  6. I feel like yesterday's storm impacted so many of us! It's windy here today but the snow (what little we got in my area) is melting fast, hooray! Sounds like a wonderful list of books, too.

  7. I hope your snow melts soon! I finished reading The Shipping News today and I think I loved it even more than when I read it the first time 30 years ago! I'm sorry I'll miss the discussion! I hope you enjoy The Queen of Dirt Island!

    1. The snow is mostly gone, and I felt the same way about The Shipping News. You will be missed during the discussion next week but I hope you can join us for the next book. Your review of Queen of Dirt Island made me put the book on hold and I'm very glad I did. Thank you!

  8. So much good stuff (even with the snow, which I hope melts quickly)! I have Donal Ryan's All We Shall Know in my TBR for this month; can't wait to hear what you think of Dirt Island.

  9. How nice you have reached the decreasing side of the shawl. I downloaded the pattern yesterday and am thinking about using some handspun for the project. We had snow again today with crazy wind yesterday and today. It's a blustery March everywhere.
