Small Wins: March 2023

I've been lucky enough to have some small wins over the last month and here are a few of them.

  • I knit two pairs of socks in the past five months but I've been afraid to wear them because my heels are so rough and I don't want to wear the socks out prematurely. I don't remember where I came across this but I can highly recommend Dr. Scholl's Severe Cracked Heel Balm. I've been using it a couple of times every day and it works really well and smells great.

  • I got my yarn scale and have been having fun weighing my Sophie shawl every twelve rows or so in hopes that I will be at the halfway point and can start decreasing. I'm not there yet, but hopefully soon!

  • I was hungry for some cinnamon swirl bread and decided to try making some with no gaps around the filling. I read the King Arthur recipe and they recommended using an egg wash on the dough before sprinkling the cinnamon-sugar filling and rolling it up tightly. I've always used butter in the past, but I tried the egg wash, and voilĂ  - no gaps! Next time I might walk on the wild side and add raisins.

  • This last one is a big win. We got our taxes done and we are getting refunds from the federal government, DE, and NJ! We owe capital gains to MD from selling the house there but our gains were offset by some rather large losses to our 401k. The losses were painful but they made what we owe to MD less painful. I'm especially glad that DE has to pay us back for a change.

Here's hoping that you've had some small (and large) wins of your own recently. Please feel free to tell me about them in the comments!

  1. Are you sure about the raisins?????? Yeah ...DO the raisins. Everything is better with raisins. OR you could go completely bat-sh*t crazy and do CRAISINS!!! Seriously though, the bread looks delicious and now I am craving toast. LOL

I'll have to look for that Dr. Scholl's stuff. I'm guessing it might work for cracked fingers too. Right now I'm using working hands, but it's only so-so. Probably would work better if I used it more consistently.

A win here? orchid rebloomed. THAT'S pretty big stuff.

  2. Those are great wins, Bonny, especially on the taxes! Your bread looks awesome.

  3. These are great wins! Your bread looks amazing! And don't you just love that scale? I predict you will find many uses!

  4. I so wish I had a piece of your no-gaps cinnamon bread RIGHT NOW, Bonny. With a big slathering of butter, please. (And I'm in the no-raisins camp, I'm afraid. . . ) I love using my yarn scale - especially when I'm trying to convince myself of something (like that I have enough yarn . . . or that surely I must be near the mid-point). It's the ultimate knitting-truth-teller! I'm happy to get your recommendation about the heel-balm. But, really, it's the Good Tax News that makes my day! (Someday, maybe I will have similar Good Tax News.) (I can always hope.) XO

  5. Oooh, that bread looks yummy! After adding cinnamon to my raisin challah last week, I've been thinking about making cinnamon raisin bread, so that's for that recipe link. I can put that on the list of recipes to try soon!

We're also getting a tax refund, which on the one hand isn't great because it means the government has gotten an interest-free loan from us the past year, but on the other hand we've been having a ridiculous time with the IRS over our 2021 return, so it feels like a win. Frankly just to have the taxes done is a win in my book!

  6. I'll have my slice of cinnamon bread toasted, please, and slathered with butter. (Yes to raisins!) Oh, my, that looks so good! Good for you on the tax front!! That's great news. I'm digging in but have a little ways to go yet...

  7. Your bread looks so yummy. I would love a piece right now (along with others) toasted and buttered. I'm ok with raisins or no raisins. Either way, I'd be happy to consume some. Congratulations on the taxes. We did not fare well this year I'm afraid. Despite paying estimate taxes, we owe...a lot...grrrrrrr.

  8. Your bread looks so good that I am craving a nice slice of cinnamon bread toasted with butter!

    1. I'd love to share a piece with you, Debbie! John ate the end of the loaf last night but that just means it's time to make some more.

  9. congrats on refunds!!! that is a celebration :) Love the sock and the heel balm recommendation.
