Sometimes Monday ...

... is a day of rest, mainly because you are so sore that you struggle to move. This weekend we insulated the attic in the MD house.

There was some insulation up there, but in the 66 years since it had been installed, it was very smushed down (technical insulator's term) and it had been placed upside-down.

John calculated, ordered 36 rolls, and since it wasn't doing anything just sitting in the garage, we had to suck it up (not without a face mask!) and put it in place.

I measured and cut sections and John laid them in place. It was hot, dark, and difficult, working on catwalk sections that we had placed on top of the rafters.

We worked on Saturday until we couldn't work any more, then got up on Sunday and worked until the job was done. I call it a success because nobody fell through the ceiling.

I honestly think it's some of the hardest work I've ever done and my knees, back, legs, and arms (and oddly, my thumbs, too) are more sore than I remember. But, hey, the house feels warmer already!

  1. Good for you!!! You and John will appreciate the warmth of your newly-insulated house whenever those cold winter winds blow!!! Hard work is always good work . . . I just wish it didn't come with the soreness it brings. ;-)

  2. Yikes! You both get some award/reward for that work. I would have been scared to death of falling. I bet you all appreciate the extra warmth - and can notice it already!!

  4. I totally would have hired someone - my hat is off to you and John for getting the job done. Rest up, you've certainly earned it! (maybe a massage, too?)

    1. I'm watching Hulu (which is even better than Netflix imho) and knitting, so life is good!
(I'm replying here because emails to you keep coming back as undeliverable. I'm not sure why, but I'll keep trying.)

  7. UGH ... nasty job to have to do. We have to do this too, but first ----- We have to have some roof braces put in place. (Ah, the joys of homes that we cobbled together from bits and pieces.)

  9. Yeomen's work, Bonny! When you are much less sore and tired, you will be so proud! I understand the thumbs be sore so very well. I had the same thing happen to me last week, and I couldn't figure out why. My husband was in the hospital, and I had to carry lots of heavy equipment and gear back and forth to the hospital several times. He is home now, and I am much less sore, but for a few days there, I really felt my age. And it wasn't nearly as hard as what you did this weekend. You are definitely a can-do woman, and I admire your grit.

  10. Congratulations on a job WELL done ... and DONE! Hoping a day of rest - really, rest! (note that knitting totally counts as rest unless it bothers your sore thumb) - has you feeling better pronto!

  12. Good for you, as some others have said, I would have paid to have someone else do it. We're lucky and have a really GOOD handyman. He's very slow, but very good.
