No News is Good News

In my efforts to cope today, I have declared a complete news blackout for myself (yes, that includes facebook also because I don't want to read anything about today's activities) and will instead spend the day doing all the good things I can think of. Some are selfish for my sanity, and some are less so.
  • Working (a necessity, so I can continue to donate to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU)
  • Donating to our local Food Pantry
  • Coloring bags for Meals on Wheels. Yes, it's a small thing, but every day volunteers bring warm meals to home-bound seniors and when the meals come in a decorated bag, they also bring a smile.
  • Assembling three different types of care packages for hospitalized children at the Hunterdon Medical Center
  • Writing emails to the Obamas, Joe Biden, John Lewis, Cory Booker, and calling my representatives
  • Knitting my Peace Cowl
  • Drinking
I will be raising my glass to all of the sensible, caring, concerned, and like-minded people that I know are out there, and I'll be drinking my second glass to all of us who demand equality and inclusion for everyone, in hopes that we can begin to help others understand the wrongs that are being perpetuated, and that bullying, xenophobia, misogyny, ignorance, and arrogance are not the way to proceed.

I'm also going to be remembering these quotes from two people I will miss very much:

"... what we’ve also tried to teach them is resilience and we’ve tried to teach them hope and that the only thing that is the end of the world is the end of the world." - Barack Obama during his final press conference

"You gotta get up." - Joe Biden

I'm going to try.

  1. that's a wonderful list - mine is much more selfish. I'm going for a walk, then to my small group (to discuss Brené Brown's Daring Greatly) and then to the yarn shop to meet up with friends... and knit. I'm even going to buy yarn! Thankfully I'm not on Facebook. Hugs, my friend. love and hope.

  2. I'm hiding from everything today, too. I want to see Obama as he deals with this but I can't deal with President Tangerine (because he's thin skinned and orange) so I'll have to sacrifice watching the last moments of the Obama presidency.

  3. This is perfect, Bonny - thank you. I am with you, I am going to try - I might stumble and falter a time or two, but I will not give up.

  4. "My desire to be well informed is currently at odds with my desire to remain sane." ( saw that in a political cartoon) and Gloria Steinem said "the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off"!
I am ignoring as much of the news today also. My day includes; friends, knitting and yarn, and fiction books.
We can be mindful but also strong.
Well said, Bonny - I am with you too.

  5. I think it is really important for us to draw attention to the good lest we allow the bad to swallow us up. Your list is full of good.

  6. I love everything you're doing today. I'm working but not reading about anything! I'm also going to a fundraiser tonight for a food pantry. Working the good, my friend.

  7. You are definitely finding the good, Bonny. And I'm right there with you . . . looking for it every day. XO

  8. I am thinking of the good (and drinking), but I will not take my eyes off that bast*rd. I love all the good things you're doing for the community. That's where it it's at, Bonny, taking care of others!

  9. I see you are taking the high road, Bonny, and the Obamas would be proud! Yes, there are lots of good people in the world, don't forget that, and you are obviously one of them. Like Margene, I think as hard as it may be, after today we shouldn't take our eyes off that bast*rd!

  10. I kept my tv on HGTV this morning - watched episodes of Flea Market Flip! Then I went out for a few hours to the bookstore and Pier I. I too would have liked to see Obama's speeches and his send-off, but I could not stomach seeing the "other who shall not be named" - so I decided to skip it all! I value my tv too much and didn't want to break it - LOL!

  11. I thought it would be easier but it's harder now than ever. Every time I put on the news on tv they are airing him... I was buoyed by the Women's march though :) :) :)

  12. Perfect. Cheers!! I didn't block things 100%, but I did not engage... spending a few hours lolling on a warm sandy beach certainly helped to take the edge off. ;)

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment! :-)
