Ta-da! A finished pair of socks for Jess for Christmas.
I got tired of photographing my knitting on our dry, crispy lawn, so I chose the ivy bed as my background. It hasn't suffered from the drought quite as much.
The new project on my needles has a little bit of a backstory. When I was working on my rainbow socks, Ryan casually mentioned that he’d love a rainbow scarf for Christmas. Since my kids rarely never ask me for knitted things, I jumped on the opportunity and went hunting for yarn right away.
I placed a pre-order about six weeks ago—it was supposed to ship in three, but of course, it took twice as long. When it finally arrived, I’ll admit I was a little taken aback. In the shop photo it looked like a classic ROYGBIV rainbow, but the skeins I received had a very different vibe. For a couple of days I debated reaching out to the dyer, but in the end I decided to just cast on and see how it knit up.
Now that I’ve got a bit of fabric on the needles, I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it … but it’s growing on me. Sometimes yarns really come to life only once you’ve got some “real estate” knitted, so I’ll keep going and see how it looks as the scarf takes shape. I'd love to hear what you think!

The socks for Jess turned out great Bonny! I think your rainbow socks had stronger colors in them - this rainbow yarn looks almost a little muted to me in comparison. But, I do like it. As you say, sometimes things improve with real estate, so I would continue knitting until at least you have all the colors completed and then see how you feel. Looking forward to your book post on Friday!
ReplyDeleteI also really like the socks for Jess! They are just so fun!! But your scarf start!! I really love it, Bonny! It is everything a rainbow scarf should be... bright and so so fun! I really like how it seems to merge from a deeper shade of color to a lighter shade of color!
ReplyDeleteLove the socks for Jess, Bonny. They're so joyful and fun. As for the rainbow yarn, I think it's really lovely -- but if it's not what you had in mind, color-wise . . . well. It might be a hurdle for your ultimate "vision" of the rainbow scarf you want to create for Ryan. You're right about the "real estate" -- you may need to knit 2 or 3 color repeats to be sure. But it's always a challenge when the materials don't quite match up to the project in your head.
ReplyDeleteLove those bright shortie socks! I rather like how the rainbow is knitting up, but you know your kid and whether or not he'd wear it. I think knitting a bit more and then making a decision is a wise course of action.
