Unraveled Wednesday: 8/13/25

I’m joining Kat and the Unravelers this week with a little unraveling and a little sock progress. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned my watermelon sock yarn, and I finally cast on with it—planning to make shortie socks for Jess. That’s when the unraveling began, both literally and in my head.

First attempt: knit the cuff in the watermelon yarn. Didn’t like how the “seeds” (the black speckles) looked in ribbing. Rip. Second attempt: cuff in solid green, then straight into the heel flap after only three rows of watermelon yarn. Didn’t like how the seeds looked in my usual eye of partridge heel. Tried solid green for the heel—looked silly with just those three watermelon rows in between. After the third unsuccessful attempt, I admitted defeat. The watermelon yarn is in time-out.

While putting it away, I spotted some bright green yarn that matches Jess' new scrubs, along with some purple yarn I’d wound ages ago. Inspiration struck! I cast on shortie socks with the green for the cuff, purple for the foot, and I’ll probably go back to green for the toe. The second sock will match—but if time allows, I might knit another pair with the colors reversed for fun. (You know how quickly I knit in my mind, even if real life is slower!)

I also finished and grafted the second sock of my blue-and-green striped pair, which I love almost as much as my rainbow socks. Now I just need some crisp fall weather to wear them.

Reading-wise, I caught up with the books I've finished on Monday. I'm currently reading The Impossible Thing and The Friend (our Read With Us selection), so I'll probably be sharing my thoughts about them next week.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. You have become a sock knitting machine! I bet Jess will love wearing those socks with her scrubs. It's still hotter than Hades here, but you know it will be autumn before we know it, and you have cheerful socks waiting for the turn! You are also reading like it's a contest, Bonny. What kind of supplements are you taking? I want some. ;)

  2. So sorry about the watermelon unraveling, but what a great substitute with the green and purple. Love them together! Don't we all knit faster in our head than in reality? I have The Friend on my nightstand and plan to start that after I finish the Bruno book I am in the middle of reading.

  4. Oh dear, that watermelon yarn had such potential. I'm confident you'll find a way to make it work eventually, but in the meantime I hope it thinks about what it's done while it's in time out. The finished socks look great -- I hope you don't have to wait too long to wear them!

  5. Sock yarn in time out... oh my! But I do love the chartreuse green yarn with that gorgeous purple! I am sure that watermelon yarn is contrite for causing you knitterly angst! I am having trouble focusing to read... so I am off on another adventure with dear Bruno. Ha!

  6. Oh, I'm betting the watermelon yarn needs more (ahem) "real estate" for the seed-effect to really . . . blossom. In the meantime, I LOVE the purple/green sock combo! Such fun! (And, yeah. The knitting-in-my-mind always goes so much faster . . . ) (Sigh.) XO

  7. Oh boy. I'm glad you landed on a combo that works for Jess's socks! Your stripes are perfect.

  8. I've got some watermelon yarn in my stash and I think it will just stay there now that I've seen your struggles. The blue and green socks are lovely. I'm looking forward to sock weather too. It's too darn hot and humid again.

    1. I was in an ornery mood so don't let my experience influence your watermelon yarn.

  9. I think that watermelon yarn just needs more of a cuff and leg to work. Your alternative socks are great and I like the idea of a reverse pair, too.

  10. The blue and green and white striped socks look great. Let's hear it for looking toward some fall days to wear wool socks. The bright socks are a great idea. Bright green yarn to match scrubs is a bonus.
