Unraveled Wednesday: 11/16/22

I'm happy to join Kat and fellow Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday with a pair of socks that just needs a toe decrease and kitchenering.

Yesterday was the kind of disturbing news day that I haven't experienced for quite a while. The Russian-made missile that killed two people in Poland and prompted discussions of NATO Articles 4 and 5 had me putting down my knitting and reading far too much news. I went to bed early with a headache, but have hopes of finishing the sock today. Like Elizabeth Zimmerman said, "Knit on, with confidence and hope, through all crises."

On a happier note, I've been listening to Michelle Obama's new book, The Light We Carry. The subtitle is Overcoming in Uncertain Times, and I am appreciating her calm and caring voice in my ears. She talks a lot about how she took up knitting during the pandemic. I also finished Dinosaurs and The Whalebone Theatre this week but they were just average three-star books for me.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I love stripey socks! But yesterdays news (all of it) had me stressing a bit as well. My solution... more poetry, less news, and yes... knitting!

  2. You have just FLOWN with those socks, Bonny! They're wonderful. I love the stripes and the color. (So festive!) I reserved a copy of Michelle Obama's new book at my local bookstore, but haven't dropped by to pick it up yet (I thought I might want to have this book in my personal library). Maybe today. I need to pick up some light to carry . . . XO

  3. I hope today brings you better news and a finished pair of socks! I just heard about The Whalebone Theatre for the first time yesterday, so what an interesting coincidence that you just finished it!

I am still plodding away on my combo spin and my Recalibrate, but I did cast on another hat yesterday (though I only knit one round).

  5. That news about the missile was very concerning. No matter where it came from, it should not have strayed into Poland. UGH! What does this portend for our country getting involved? Who knows!

The socks look great. And ............knitting will get us through.

  6. It seems like you finished those socks in record time! As for the news, my advice is turn it off.

  7. I have tried to avoid doom scrolling lately, but I did fall down the rabbit hole a bit this AM looking up whether Trump could actually do the dictatorial things he promised in his speech last night. No, I did not watch it, but I read a short article from the Bulwark this AM that thoroughly shocked me about his promises. https://www.thebulwark.com/trumps-authoritarian-promise/. I researched whether or not they were possible. Yes to some (yikes), no to some (hooray). I don't think he could get reelected, but who knows? The news is disturbing to me almost every day. I have tried to limit my intake, but some things just grab me. Those socks are really perfect. And you did really knit them quickly. More knitting, more reading, less doom scrolling is the cure for lots of things, I find.

  8. My anal soul always admires matchy-matchy socks like yours! And I just added Michelle Obama's book to my Audible wish list. I listed to Barack Obama read his book last winter; it was absolutely wonderful to hear his intelligent, insightful, comforting voice again.

  9. That news about the missle strike in Poland was very upsetting, I have to monitor my news intake and turn it off as needed.

I look forward to reading Michelle Obama's book soon. I just finished a fantastic book about bird migration called A World on the Wing and I just started Signal Fires.

    1. I just have to read the news once/day and try not to focus on it. I saw your review of World on the Wing and was thrilled to find that my hold on it was ready. I'm going to start it this evening and am quite looking forward to it!

  10. I read the news early in the day and then read what I call the "knitting news" in the evening, i.e. blogs, Ravelry etc. Your socks look great. You will have them in time for Christmas.
