Sometimes Monday ...

... is the start of Gratitude Week here at Highly Reasonable. I'm grateful much of the time, and for many of the same things that I suspect all of you are thankful for. Each day this week, I'll highlight one of those things.

Today I'm grateful for books, libraries, librarians, and all of the book recommendations I get from you. I'm lucky enough to belong to five different libraries (Poudre River in CO, Elkton Public Library in MD, Bucks County Free Library in Bucks County, PA, and Hunterdon County Library and Flemington Free library in NJ). When we've helped the kids buy houses, our names have been on the deeds, so all I've had to do is take the deed to the library and they have all happily given me cards. I don't feel bad because I also help the kids pay their property taxes so I am supporting the libraries financially.

Because I have access to so many libraries, I can almost always find a book that I am looking for. I can only borrow Kindle or audio versions from CO, MD, and PA, but that often works just fine. I read four books this past weekend and three of them came from libraries. The books were a mix of fiction and non-fiction, average and above average, and I learned something from each one of them. (You can click on my reviews in the right-hand sidebar if you're interested.)

And now I'm reading a bit of fluff in the form of Christmas mysteries by Donna Andrews. Bucks County Free Library had a bunch of these and I thought I'd give them a try. Normally I'm not much for books like these, but I like good puns, they are written with humor, and are good listening material during a busy week.

So a big thank you to libraries and books for providing me with so much lifelong enjoyment. What are you reading?

  1. I'm reading The Marriage Portrait (and loving it!!). I, too, am so thankful and grateful for libraries and books. All my life I've been an avid reader and am also thankful that I grew up in a home of readers. Question: what does "bcfl" mean in your tags?

  2. I don't know what I'd have done without access to the libraries in my life! I'm also grateful for libraries, Bonny. But jealous that you have access to so many!!! ;-)

  3. Life without libraries is a scary thought! (and I am likewise envious of your Plethora of Libraries to choose from!) I am so happy to live in Allegheny County with the Carnegie Library System is the most incredible! I cannot think of a book they have not had that I wanted to read. An incredible blessing!

  4. You know I love this post, right?! Thank you for supporting libraries all across the country! I think cozy mysteries are fun and the perfect genre for a busy time of year.

  5. Wow, 5 library cards - I'm impressed! I only have 3. Since you are a library card collector, I feel I should tell you that the Free Library of Philadelphia has a generous card program that is open to anyone who lives in the state. I'm not sure if you still own property in PA, but here you go: https://catalog.freelibrary.org/MyResearch/register/policy They have a HUGE OverDrive collection!

  6. I am so very, very thankful for libraries, especially the past few years. The vast majority of the books I read come from the library, so I can only imagine the thousands of dollars I've saved by not having to buy those books. Right now I'm reading (very slowly) Demon Copperhead, and I just finished a Maisie Dobbs audiobook on my walk this morning.

  8. My local library is undergoing renovations and is open at the mall so I've been using the library a town over. Today I picked up 3 holds that all came in at the same time.

    1. I wonder why holds all seem to come at once? I hope you've got some reading time in the future!

  9. I don't know what I would do without my local library, but having said that, they have parted ways with me since they rarely have books I really want to read. I don't know why that happened - me or them? But they are wonderful, nevertheless. I am green with envy over your library access. I wish there was a library somewhere that would charge me to belong. I would happily pay for access. Just dropping in, Bonny, to say I am busy buying a house for my brother, so I will be absent for a while, I think. It's a lot of work looking for and buying a house, as I know you understand. But so worth it! My brother is coming back from far away!

  10. I just returned The Marriage Portrait to the library this afternoon and had similar thoughts. I am finishing up Four Souls by Erdrich and also began a light seasonal read, Winter Solstice by R. Pilcher. I need a little gentler kind of story as the holidays approach.

  11. I believe that libraries are the heart of communities and I can't imagine life without them. I am also very grateful because I was recently appointed as a member of our library's board of trustees and I am happy to serve!

    1. That is wonderful news, Debbie! As a thoughtful and varied reader, you will be a great trustee and a real asset to the library and community. Congratulations!
