Three on Thursday

I spent a restless night last night, listening to the thunder and rain on the windows through about 3 am, but despite the locally heavy thunderstorms and flash flood warnings, it doesn't look like a repeat of last week. Thank goodness, especially because we haven't yet had a chance to install second sump pumps. Because I'm a little bleary-eyed this morning, I looked through my folders and found three random things that I thought would work to join Carole for Three on Thursday.

1.  Did anybody else know that ivy bloomed? I sure didn't.

Our neighbor's fence in MD is covered with them, and I like how they look like little fireworks. I'll have to check next week and see what the flowers actually look like.

2.  I saw this on instagram a while ago and really liked it. This is a new way to think about exercise for me!

3.  While checking facebook for precipitation and possible flooding during my sleepless night, I came across this. I find this to be quite true and something to remember (and it looks like it's even attributed correctly!)

Have you found any interesting random photos, quotes, or something new to you lately? I'd love to hear about it!

  1. I want to know what kind of ivy that is! I have never seen ivy bloom, and it is everywhere down here in the South. Hopefully another commenter will know. #2 is so true! I try to concentrate on staying functional, and that is why I exercise. Think of staying physically independent as long as possible rather than the sweat and aches and pains. I try to picture walking to my death bed, rather than crawling there - LOL. #3 is so very true and somewhat sad. I am so glad you did not have any basement problems with this last rain! Now, take a nap!

  2. I've never seen anything like that on ivy, not even on my college campus (which, as you would expect, was covered with ivy). And I totally agree with #2. It's been a real shift in my thinking in the past year or so to realize that exercise isn't so much a necessary evil but rather something amazing that my body lets me do.

I'm so relieved to hear that the rain did not result in a repeat of last week. I'm sure many people near you were having trouble sleeping last night worrying about what might happen!

  3. I have never seen ivy bloom quite like that, although I have seen things that look like little berries on ivy plants before -- and plant guides often refer to "insignificant blooms" on various types of ivy. But - wow! That doesn't look "insignificant" to me!!! And I am ALL ABOUT #2!!!!

And here's to no more rain for you for awhile. At least until you can get additional sump pumps installed. (When the town I lived in had a big tornado in 1979, I was traumatized by storms for years and years. I still don't like scary storms. . . )

  4. Wow! I've seen a lot of ivy in my life, but never any blooming. They are pretty and you are right - looks like mini fireworks. Very cool. We had about half an inch of rain overnight, but obviously nothing significant...thank God!

  5. Those ivy blooms are so cool, I've never seen that before. And #2 speaks to me and is something I need to remember.

  6. Oh number three you speak to me! I'm a rabble rouser (sp?) as I head out the door here at work. Kinda fun not having any future backlash! :-)

  7. I've never seen blooms like that on ivy, they are interesting flowers. I'm glad you made it through the storms and I hope you have a good stretch of dry weather!

    1. We have ivy at home in NJ and I've never seen blossoms. As far as I know this is just regular, garden variety ivy, so I'll see what the blossoms look like when they open and try a google search.
P.S. I'm relieved about no flooding last night. Tired, but relieved!

  8. Our grass dried out a little today ... hope yours will too! I sat in on a class this afternoon "What Kind of Classics Reader Are You?" and in the definition of a classic, the presenters shared this "A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say." ...from an essay by Italo Calvino. It's a lovely piece!

  9. Sorry for the worries but they are justified after what you went through. I find it funny that when I was younger all the dieting and exercising was for looks, now it is to LIVE healthy - go figure!!

  10. I read this from a trailer for a new hostess, Ada Limon, for the Slowdown Podcast about poetry. She compared seeing the autumn leaves of a tree to poetry. Referring to leaves, she wrote, "Each large and many-colored leaf was like a new contract with possibility. A small doorway where I might enter the world again. Enter the world through attention." She went on to say that poetry also did that for her.

I did not know that ivy bloomed. I wonder what variety it is? I am sorry you have been up night worrying about more rain. I can understand exactly why that happened but wish you didn't have to have those worries. I am quite a worry-wart myself.
