40

Our wedding anniversary was yesterday, and John and I have been married for 40 years. That sounds like a loonng time to me, but I've known John for at least 48 years.

This is what we looked like on June 13, 1981

Like any marriage, there have been ups and downs, but we're lucky that there have been many more times on the upside. We've never been one of those couples that is joined at the hip, so we each do plenty of things on our own. Shockingly, John has little interest in reading and knitting, so those are solo pursuits for me. I'm not a big fan of hunting, so that's an activity he pursues by himself or with Justin. We've spent plenty of time apart; the summer after we got married, John was at Woods Hole and I stayed home and worked. A few years later, he took three months off from his graduate program and headed out west while I stayed in Syracuse and worked. He's been in MD for the past two weeks while I took care of things in NJ. I wonder if our time apart might help (and can you tell that I'm a bit nervous about him retiring next year and being around all the time)?

This is what we looked like on June 14, 1981.

Whatever the reason, my life is better with John than without him, and I hope he would say the same thing.

  3. Happy Anniversary, Bonny! Forty years seems like a long time to me, too, but I bet a lot of those years went by in a flash. I think time apart in a good relationship is always therapeutic. I love my husband, but I miss those years when he went fishing for the weekend and we enjoyed time apart. We are together 24/7 now, but it's OK. We live in the same house, but respect one another's space, so it's all good. You and John will adjust when he retires. It's a new chapter! Have a great Monday.

    1. Thank you, Debbie! We're both a little bit older and grayer but sometimes we feel like the youngsters in those photos!

  9. Happy Anniversary! Love, love, love those pictures! Doug's been home for a year (planned pre-covid) and I've still been at work but...I did fear coming home to him in the house every afternoon. Good news...we're a lot like you and it's been fine! 10/15/21 we'll both be home and retired!

  11. Happy Anniversary! ...and I'm SURE he would say the same thing! (in our experience, getting used to being together more is an adjustment, but it's been a good one)

    1. We probably look exactly the same because those pictures are only a day apart! We were glad to get back to jeans and t-shirts after a day of being dressed up. We are definitely older and grayer now, but sometimes we still feel 40 years younger!

  14. Happy Anniversary. For us, a little time apart or pursuing different interests works for us too. My husband plays golf and watches baseball and college football while I listen to an audiobook and knit. Wonderful photos make for a good walk down memory lane. The clothing looks so familiar.
