Unraveled Wednesday

I'm joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with the second Nervous Breakdown once again.

It doesn't look a lot different, but some decisions have been made. Ryan would like it to be knit from mostly Nervous Breakdown yarn, with some contrasting vivid stripes, much like my original one. I wound the second Nervous Breakdown skein and have started knitting with it, alternating skeins so hopefully the changeover won't be obvious. Now that I'm done with taxes and no longer have them hanging over my head, I will hopefully have more knitting time.

I finished The Invisible Life of Addie Larue (sadly, it just wasn't the book for me) but also read Gone to the Woods, Gary Paulsen's autobiography. This one was easily four stars, and I might bump that up since I find myself still thinking about it and his life. Gary Paulsen's books have been reading material in our house for several decades, and I thought this was one of his best survival stories. Justin was recently looking for his copy of Hatchet and the sequels and we were both shocked that we couldn't find them anywhere. His birthday is on Saturday, and I've selfishly ordered the whole Hatchet series for him (that way I can re-read them, too). I'm still reading The Premonition, but also casting about for some really good immersive fiction.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I just love that Hitchhiker. It is so colorful and fun. Gosh! I remember Colin reading the Hatchet books - they really were good. I just started a new book "Daughters of the Dust" by Julie Dash and it is quite good.

  3. I have never read Paulsen. I'll have to look into the books. Your second NB is looking good, Bonny. I hope you find you have a lot more reading/knitting time now that the dreaded taxes are done. I tried to read Hour of the Witch, but promptly took it back to the library. I couldn't get into it. That has happened a lot lately. I started When the Stars Go Dark yesterday. I am not crazy about the author's writing style, but maybe I can get into this one. I have been looking for immersive fiction myself. I am going to get a haircut today, the first one I have had since February of 2020. I'm excited!

  4. I'm glad to hear that the only nervous breakdown involved in this Hitchhiker is adding in the second skein of yarn and that your plan for the rest of it has been laid out. I'm sorry Addie wasn't right for you. I never read any of Gary Paulsen's books as a child, but I think my brother read them and enjoyed them (that genre really didn't appeal to me, so I never thought to give them a try). Hooray for taxes being done!

  5. Taxes being done is absolutely a good thing as is that gorgeous Hitchhiker! I like the stripe idea! I think that will look so lovely. There is something just so wonderful about those long rows... you can just settle in and lean into the meditation of knitting.

  6. Oh, Brian loved that Hatchet series! (He was my reluctant reader. . . and I was thrilled to find something he would actually pick up and read.) Love the Nervous Breakdown. It's going to be spectacular!

  7. My favorite Paulsen book is Winterdance: The Fine Magic of Running the Iditarod. Funny and spiritual at the same time. Now I must look for his autobiography.

  8. The Hatchet series was a big favorite in our house too. And if I were to have a nervous breakdown I would want it to look just like that!

  11. I love the colors of the solid yarns next to the Hitchhiker. It is so much fun. My son read a few of Paulsen's books. He was more of a sci-fi and fantasy guy. When I asked him if he wanted another one, he said he didn't think he could read one more "survival in the wilderness" story. He was always very direct with his opinions. I might look for his biography though. Writer's biographies/memoirs intrigue me.

  12. here for the Hitchhikers ... always! (and I do love Ryan's taste in contrasting stripes :-)

also, I haven't even heard of those books that Justin loves. I love the depth and breadth (and I'm pretty sure there's a fourth dimension as well, I just haven't cracked it!) of books!
