Sometimes Monday ...

... is a day for nephrolithiasis (in other words, kidney stones). On Saturday I woke up with severe left-side adbominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. After six or seven hours, the pain had migrated to my lower back, and I began to get a clearer picture of diagnosing myself. Initially, I was thinking about diverticulitis, but as the day wore on and a few more symptoms appeared, kidney stones seemed to be a more likely candidate in the differential diagnosis.

I called my SiL (a family practice physician) to ask for her advice. I wasn't very anxious to go to the Emergency Room, and she agreed with my self-diagnosis and confirmed that all they could really do was give me drugs and do some imaging to confirm. I might call my doctor today to see what he wants me to do, but I don't want to spend any more time at the hospital than necessary. They are right in describing the pain as being akin to childbirth, so some good drugs might entice me.

Kidney stones under the microscope look like jagged spikes of pain.

I could also try a roller coaster (but I am fairly sure I won't be doing that). I hope your weekend was a little better than mine!

  1. Oh, Bonny, I am so sorry! All the men in my family have this malady, but so far, I have escaped it. I will pass along that my husband actually had his move when taking him home from the urologist when I drove over a very rough road in a Jeep with a rough ride. I guess it was a form of roller coaster! I wish I had some advice, but your SIL has given you all the advice you need. Maybe your primary care MD will call in some pain pills after a phone or telemed consultation? I will hope for that and also that you pass a very small stone and feel better very soon.

  9. Oh man, I'm sorry about that!! Cripes. It's 2020, though, so might as well get that over with this year when it's all in the crapper anyway. Sending sincere hopes that you can be extra thankful soon!!

  11. I am so sorry, Bonny. While I have been plagued with diverticulitis, I have never experienced kidney stones . . . but from what I understand about kidney stones, I'd rather deal with diverticulitis! I hope things clear up without your needing to visit the ER -- or a roller coaster. Here's to a quick recovery. XO

    1. Thank you, Julia! I'm only on Day 3, but I feel like I've aged at least 5 years. Good to know that maybe my youthful charming looks will return! :-)

  15. How perfectly dreadful! Please do take care. I can't help but be worried about you although I'm sure you're a better diagnostician then my doctor was in 1981. He diagnosed me with kidney stones, but long story short, he ended up cutting me open to find an infection of my left ovary that needed immediate removal. Diverticulitis came 5 years later and it was diagnosed as the cause of infection in the first place!

  18. Oh, NO! I hope those stones roll through relatively quickly so you can enjoy some of this holiday week. What a year. I'm glad you are able to avoid the additional stress of a hospital visit during the pandemic. Take care.

PS - does this get you out of cooking commitments for Thursday? ha...
