Bright Spots

Far too often I pay too much attention to the tragic, unjust, or awful things that are going on in the world. There are plenty of them but doom and gloom all the time doesn't help anyone's sanity, let alone their happiness. I took a look around and started paying attention to all the bright spots that are really there every day, just waiting for me to notice them.

I paid attention to the literal bright spots in the colorful embroidery on the shirt I was ironing.

It was fun to find a bit of Ryan's childhood in our barn when I was putting oil in the mower. I discovered this bag with special marbles inside, and when I sent him the pictures he remembered hiding them from Justin about 19 years ago.

John harvested about 20 pounds of carrots from the garden so I decided to make carrot souffle and a carrot cake. This shiny, new, sharp peeler made the chore a delight.

You have also provided me with plenty of opportunities for moments of happiness. Sarah shared her cheerful blossoming sunflower; Carole managed to make me laugh at the impending sense of doom so many of us are feeling; I love the photo that Kat shared of Vivi and her chicken's first egg, and Kym gives us hope and poetry on Fridays.

So, thank you. For reading what I write, for commenting, for providing friendship, support, inspiration, and so much more. I appreciate all of you and the welcoming blogging community, and I'm grateful for all of the bright spots. If you have any bright spots of your own to share, I'd love to hear about them!

  1. I have a lot of bright spots in my life, too many to name. It's a good idea for me to practice a day of gratitude today. I'm quite concerned about some things, so it will give me a reason to be positive during these challenges. Happy Friday, Bonny! Save me some carrot cake and souffle - YUM!

  3. That embroidered shirt is beautiful. And I'm so glad we're all connected through our blogs. It makes a lot of this much more pleasant, bright spots and dark ones, too. XOXO

  4. I had to laugh at the fact that Ryan hid those marbles 19 years ago -- sounds like he hid them so well that he forgot about them!

I am so glad that you've found some bright spots to focus on, and that I could bring a little cheer to your day with my sunflower (I'm anxiously awaiting the opening of the second one!). I am so thankful, especially this year, for the friends I've made thanks to the Internet and our blogs.

  6. Some days . . . it's really hard. But our days go so much better when we focus on those little bright spots! Thanks so much for sharing yours. XO

I so love that you found Ryan's special marbles . . . after all that time! What fun -- for you and for Ryan, too. Lost treasure! It reminds me of a similar story. Last year, on the beach of our lake up north, I unearthed one of Erin's childhood plastic dinosaurs. She used to create elaborate beach-dioramas for her plastic dinosaur collection, and one must have been buried and left behind for decades now -- very much like Ryan's marbles. Erin was thrilled when I sent her a photo of the dino -- and I washed it up and mailed it to her. She keeps it on her desk as a childhood-memento now. :-)

  8. I do try hard to find the sunshine through the clouds; the funny thing is that our weather has suddenly turned so dreary. Weather effects me too much. I need to work on that! I don't imagine myself moving, from Wisconsin, but the winter is so long. an Covid is not helping.
Bright spot: Cubs in first place...

  9. It's always good to look for the bright spots when possible. Hiding marbles from a brother sounds like a good story. I wonder if they both forgot about them after awhile. And goodness - 20 lbs of carrots is a lot of carrots. I bet both the souffle and the cake are delicious.

  10. playing catchup and hoping Ryan is still OK in Ft Collins (although I will say that thanks to Sara's visit, I'm a LOT more comfortable with air travel right now ... wear glasses and a mask and take a bottle of hand sanitizer ... it'll be fine!) The blanket turned out beautifully and I'm sure you have those socks finished now. I'm going to take a cue from you and be sure to share a BRIGHT spot on my blog this week. Let's make it A Thing!

  12. I am SO behind, but very happy to come across your post of the bright spots you've found. I have been paying more attention to bright spots close at hand and not spending much time on-line. I miss you as you are a bright spot in my world!
