Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with a request for your opinion.

The beads I ordered for my Hitchhiker arrived. I opened them excitedly but was a bit underwhelmed.

My photos are not the best, but that is what the beads look like in real life. This is the original photo from etsy, but mine are cloudier and just don't glow like this.

I thought maybe I would sew one on each end, possibly along with some clear silver-lined beads, but now I'm not so sure.

So what do you think? (I wasted way too much time trying to create a poll but was ultimately unsuccessful. If you have an opinion, let me know in the comments!)

I finished Song Yet Sung last week, and it was well worth listening to. I've started two new books, Breath, and The Night Watchman. Breath is a different sort of nonfiction that I'm not quite sure about so far, but The Night Watchman is really compelling.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Wow! Your beads Bonny don't look anything like the picture from Etsy, but I do like yours too. And I think they will look nice on the Hitchhiker. The darker shades in your beads really match the darker shades in your yarn. Breath looks like an interesting read - I'll look forward to your review (I need to get back to practicing my "yoga breath"). I'm reading Song Yet Sung and enjoying it a lot.

  2. Sorry but I have to vote no. The color is kind of ok but I don't like the shape (square) with the hitchhiker (pointy). Also, they look really big.

    1. Thank you for your thoughts! I wasn't thrilled with the color, but I hadn't even thought about the shape. You make a good point! :-)

  3. That's so disappointing -- I can see why you were drawn to the beads from the Etsy photo, but what you got looks nothing like that! I don't dislike the beads, but I think they're too dull to go with the bright colors of your Hitchhiker. I'd skip them for this project, but I think they'd be lovely to use in some other project.

I'm listening to Song Yet Sung right now and enjoying it. I don't know if you're ever able to make it to the Zoom meeting that Mary hosts on Sundays, but we've decided to do an unofficial book club on it, as several of us have read or are reading it. I think the plan it to discuss it at our first meeting in August.

  4. the beads do not match the photo. I have no opinions on what I think. I do think you should put it in time out for 48 hours then pull it out and go with your gut.

  5. Boy, those beads don't match the image at all. My vote is no on this Hitchhiker... boo! But, I do think those beads have potential for another project!

  6. I vote no! And the narration was quite good in Song Yet Sung wasn't it! :-)

  7. Nope. Those beads will not enhance your Hitchhiker.

  8. Hmm. After all that knitting time, I only think you should use beads that make you happy. Have you checked Fire Mountain Gems?

  9. i would have been all over the etsy beads, but the ones you received? well, not so much. I don't think the hitchhiker needs them, though. the yarn is lovely and will be a showstopper without them!!
and thanks for mentioning the winter book!!! I had no idea it was out....off to order it!

    1. That's the way I'm leaning with the beads. This may be one of my favorite Hitchhikers because of the yarn, and I don't want to "lessen" it with these beads. I may have to read Jansson's Moomin books if A Winter Book doesn't arrive soon!

  10. Hard to say, Bonny, without seeing them in person. I trust your judgement. Do as you wish, and maybe those beads will look terrific on something else if you don't like them on this Hitchhiker. I have a feeling they might look good on something neutral. Glad you are enjoying The Night Watchman! I really loved it.

  11. I've got to say, I don't love those beads. Seems like that's everyone else's opinion, including yours. Can you return them? Or will you keep them for another project? I have The Night Watchman on my list to read, I usually enjoy Louise Erdrich.

  12. Nothing new to add about the beads for this HH ... but I do like them for another project. Song Yet Sung is on my near term TBR ... and I can't wait to get the Louise Erdrich (gah... LONG LINE)

  13. No on those beads. They are meant for another lovely thing.

  14. Yes, underwhelming. Save for something else. The pictured ones would have been perfect. Too bad craft stores are not the best place to be right now.

    1. I was trying to convince myself that it would be okay to use these beads but I know I won't be happy with them. Luckily beads are not a life or death matter and I don't think I will be going to a store to look for them!

  15. Well, I am a little late but if you aren't happy with those beads, I'd either save them for another project or return them. They sure don't look anything like the Etsy photo. The hitchhiker though is very fun. It looks just like the photos you've been posting.

  16. Wow, that's... misrepresentation! I'm sure you've already made a decision, but I don't think the beads you received will enhance your shawl. Bummer.
