Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, and because I can't bear to show you another picture of the Hitchhiker that still needs a few more teeth, I'm showing you possibilities instead.

I'm going to cast on soon for fingerless gloves for Justin and Ryan. I haven't bought yarn during the pandemic, but one day I was in a mood and thought I would buy a skein that was perfect for each of them and knit something for Christmas. They have sIze 13 and 14 feet respectively and are both hard on their socks, so fingerless gloves it will be. Given the current coronavirus numbers, I had some slightly morbid thoughts when I purchased the yarn, but I think when I finally catch up with all the zucchini and cucumbers in the garden, I'll be happy to be knitting on projects for my kids.

I finished The Night Watchman late last night, but haven't written a review yet. It was a four-star read for me at least, and my favorite of the Louise Erdrich books that I've read.

“When he needed to calm his mind, he opened a book. Any book. He had never failed to feel refreshed, even if the book was no good.”
― Louise Erdrich, The Night Watchman

I couldn't sleep, so looking to calm my mind, I started another book, The Prettiest Star. It's a heart-breaking story set in 1986 about a young man with AIDS who returns home to his family to die. It was probably not the best book to read when I couldn't sleep, but it is good (even if I know how it's going to end).

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Beautiful new yarns Bonny!! Did you shop at a store? Vulcan's Rest? Or on line? Both skeins look great. I'm planning to knit up some fingerless mitts for Christmas presents too! Hope your garden produce is slowing down! We had our first regular (small, but not cherry size) tomato last night - delicious!

  2. Those are very different skeins but, given what I know about your boys from reading your blog, very well suited to the recipients!

I haven't read any Louise Erdrich in a long time. Both you and Katie have recommended her books this week, so I think I need to rectify that.

  3. Ooo! I love both of those yarns!! I just started The Summer Book last night (in a bout of insomnia... sigh.) And today I need to tink back a round on my newly cast on sweater... double sigh!

  4. Yes, Bonny, best to go on like we are all going to survive this pandemic in good health! We all have morbid thoughts, but I try to let them flow right out of my mind like water. Sometimes it is difficult. But you know we are programmed to think the worst through evolution that has helped the species survive, so it is a good thing in small doses, repeat small doses only. LOL I like your plans for getting started on Christmas knitting. It's optimistic, and we all need some optimism these days. I am so glad you liked the book. It has been one of my favorites this year. I am struggling to find things I want to read lately, but I will persevere. Happy Wednesday!

  7. My son's feet are in that range, too. I haven't yet knit him a pair of socks!
I can't read fiction about AIDS or the Holocaust. Those two topics really get to me.

    1. I've knit a couple of pairs of socks for each of my sons and that is quite enough!

  8. I do like those choices and agree that they suit the recipients! I'm finishing the TTL MKAL - had some downtime waiting for additional yarn and reading easy...a Nelson DeMille and an Elin Hildebrand! No heavy lifting this week! :-)

  10. Such pretty yarns for fingerless mitts. Sometimes it is fun to buy/order yarn and then cast on the projects. Fingerless mitts make such nice gifts for everyone.

  11. I am going to have our little boys choose yarn this week for birthday gifts. gonna leave it up to them about sweaters, socks, mittens, hats (they are small enough that even a sweater wish is doable). your post reminded me just how much I love being able to knit for them. honestly for any of the folks in my family. it's one of the few tangible ways I can express my love. xoxo.

  12. Isn't that a great line in The Night Watchman? It's been true for me the last few months. The mitts will be fun to watch as they grow into perfect gifts.
