Sometimes Monday ...

... is a day to encourage my amaryllis.

I just repotted and watered the bulbs two weeks ago after their winter rest, and these are growing nicely.

There are no signs of leaves sprouting on these two yet, but it's well-known fact that a watched amaryllis never grows. I'm back in MD this week, so maybe they'll reward me with more signs of green when I head back to NJ this weekend.

Hope your week is off to a good start!

  1. You have wonderful luck with your "saved" amaryllis bulbs! I'd love your tips for saving amaryllis bulbs from year to year. I had some early failures when I tried to re-pot, and now tend to just compost my bulbs. You've inspired me to try again! Can't wait to see what happens next.

  2. Yay for re-emerging growth. I bet you'll see something on those last two when you return to NJ. My Dad used to just put the pots with the spent bulbs in the back of a closet and ignored them until the Fall when he would bring them out and start watering. His always came back with gusto! Have a great week Bonny!

  4. Oh I live for you guys and your green and growing things. We are under snow and ice. WE love our summers though, don't we ? Fireman keeps complaining about how nice it looks in FLA and AZ. Well, I don't want to be there in summer when you can't walk out the door! Im hoping my efforts last fall will yield a gorgeous groups of flowers come MAY!!!! or JUNE ....

    1. Here's hoping mine will actually bloom, but even green and growing things are nice in winter. I bet your fall planting efforts will pay off beautifully with gorgeous flowers in spring and summer!

  5. It's been years since I had an amaryllis (the one I had was a gift), and I never knew you could save them and get them to bloom again!

  6. I just planted my new amaryllis bulbs last week. I've got green sprouts on one out of three but I have hope that they will all bloom eventually.

  7. I was given an amaryllis as a gift every year, and never was interested in growing one. Until one year, I wasn't impressed with the results so never tried again. I do believe that plants thrive when they are cared for and loved, (like all living things,IMO), and my amaryllis did poorly because my heart was not in it.

  12. The bulbs we had last year almost refused to stop shooting up leaves (we finally composted them in the fall) - and I've had a similar experience with leaves ... and never any flowers from previous years. Like Kym, I would love to know how to get them to re-bloom! and I can't wait to see what awaits you on your return to NJ!

  13. If anyone can grow anything it is you! I know you will have some green leaves in no time at all.

  14. I hope you are rewarded with progress when you return. Your amaryllis are always so beautiful. I saw some tempting cyclamen plants at the floral shop in a grocery store last time I shopped. I think I'm going to pick one up next time I shop.

  15. I had success the one and only time I tried. I put the plant outdoors all summer and then let if freeze in the fall. After it lived in the closet for a few months (2-3?) I spotted it one day and saw a new bud pushing through! It had two lovely stems that year. I think I'll try it again, knowing the outcome could be different. Fingers crossed for new blossoms on all your bulbs!
