Three on Thursday

I'm joining Carole and friends for Three on Thursday, today with three things that I did this week.

I renewed my passport.

I was expecting a long bureacratic mess with lots of frustration, but our County Clerk's office has finely honed the process. I would like to be able to fly after October 1st of next year, but New Jersey in its infinite wisdom has elected to begin issuing Real ID licenses by appointment, after they work out the kinks in the process. The estimate is that they will only be able to issue Real ID licenses to 20% of NJ license holders over the next year, so I checked my passport, went to renew it, and was done in 45 minutes.

I saw the Downton Abbey movie.

Simply put, it was a delightful escape! I couldn't find anybody who wanted to see it with me, so I went alone and enjoyed myself immensely.

I said "Finally!"

There is a long way to go, and there will be lots of evidence, rhetoric, and bluster to wade through, but at least the official process has begun.

Imagine being so clueless that you think this memo helps you!

Head on over to Carole's for more Three on Thursday thoughts.

  1. I opted to not get the Real ID license since I have a passport anyway and I was able to renew my current license online. Avoiding a trip to the RMV is a win around here! I'm looking forward to the Downton Abbey movie a lot and I sure hope you're right on the last one!

  2. I also just went to renew my passport -- but I had to apply for a brand-new one because the expired one was from before I got married and changed my name! And I completely agree with you about the Downton Abbey movie. Perfect escapism!

  3. I had an easy time getting my REAL ID . . . because I had a passport already. (I know.) I'm looking forward to seeing the Downton Abbey movie -- and I'll probably need to see it alone, too. And . . . yeah. About time! XO

  4. #2...I love going to movies alone. I used to teach on a MWF schedule, and I loved going to a quiet Tuesday matinee, solo! And #3? Now we're talkin'.

  5. I have to send my passport in for renewal, thank you for that reminder! And, I am eager to go see the Downton movie!

But, that last one...it makes me happy that the tipping point has finally been reached!

  6. FINALLY and what took so freakin' long?

I have a passport, but opted to get a *real* ID when I renewed my license. It was quick - the only difference was they mailed my new license/*real* id to me. And it came in under a week!

  8. I don't know WHAT PA did with my license application, but apparently I cannot get REAL ID with my certificate of birth that I just got through vital statistics. I don't know whether they didn't update my record or what ............but I've just decided I don't need one so I'm not bothering with it. It's a bureaucratic crapfest!

  9. I went to see Downton Abbey with a friend on Tuesday afternoon, what a delightful movie!
I renewed my Illinois driver's license last year when it was due, now I either have to renew my passport or renew my license again...I'm renewing my passport!

    1. I also saw the movie at an afternoon matinee, and delightful is the perfect word to describe the whole experience. My passport renewal was surprisingly easy, and I hope yours is, too!

  10. The great state of Maine is the same with the Real ID thing. Glad passport renewal wasn't a hassle. I'm going to see Downton soon--and probably by myself.

  12. I better find out about this new Passport thing. Do we need to if we aren't leaving the country? Or maybe we should in case we need to leave to see Zach. ....hmmmmm.
    Thanks for the topic.

    1. As of October 1, 2020, you will need a Real ID license (or other acceptable form of ID like your passport) to fly within the US. Most states are compliant and issuing Real ID licenses, but NJ is one of three states that is not even issuing them yet, which is why I was concerned. You can read about it here: https://www.tsa.gov/real-id

  13. I renewed mine last fall and the real id here is rolling out slowly. I guess I will use the passport until I renew my driver's license and can opt for real id.

  14. I had to renew my driver's license last year at milestone-birthday-time and got the Real ID then, and have an alert on my calendar to send my passport renewal in February!
