Three on Thursday

Joining Carole and friends for Three on Thursday. Today it's with three things I've learned about home improvement projects.

1.  Just do it. Gather all the materials you think you'll need, read through the instructions, and don't forget you tube videos, but at some point you're going to have to stop preparing, just get started, and do it.

2.  Don't overthink. This tile installation was over existing tile and we spent loads of time in The Home Depot and got differing advice from almost every employee we talked to. One said we would be fine, another said we had to use special leveling cement, and one said it was really too bad we hadn't thought about this before we bought the house. (I hope he was joking!) John put it down over the existing tile and we think it will be fine for at least three years when we sell this house.

3.  Don't underestimate the power of moral support. I've always felt guilty when I wasn't actively working on a project, but with this one I was really only providing moral support. Mary was kind enough to point out that this was a real and sometimes difficult job. It requires checking math and instructions, along with providing support and optimism for as long as the job lasts. I did those things and then spent an hour rolling out the tile with my rolling pin, so I didn't feel quite so bad. And I will be replacing the 1960s shelf paper in the bathroom closet single-handedly, so there is that!

Head on over to Carole's for more Three on Thursday.

  1. The tile looks great! I think another thing you did was not overestimate your abilities. You did what you were good at and let the "pro" do the rest.

  2. It turned out great, Bonny ... I'm sure completely due to your stellar moral support! (and whoa, I'm kind of in love with the burgundy ceramics in that bathroom!)

  6. Wow, that turned out wonderfully Bonny!! And, I second Vicki's thoughts... with space at a premium - one worker at a time is the best plan!

  7. This looks so good, Bonny. Just spend your energy patting your husband in the back and be glad. Does he cook Thanksgiving dinner? We all have our strengths, and as Vicki says, there is only so much room in a bathroom!

  8. It looks beautiful! What an improvement. A bath is a little hard for two people to work in so moral support is usually all you can do, but it is huge! You do other things that John cannot and I doubt he felt the need for you to be on your knees helping. I often say the best rooms in our house are the bathrooms as they're newer than anything else!

  10. Looks so good! I was curious to see how it turned out after seeing the picture from the start of the project. That bathroom looks twice as big!

    1. Thank you, Sue! I looked back at the previous photos and you're right; the bathroom does look much bigger. I hadn't noticed it in person as I was probably busy admiring how much lighter it looked.

  11. The floor looks terrific! There wouldn't have been room for both of you in there anyway and I'm sure your moral support was greatly appreciated.

  12. Your guy did that so quickly! It looks wonderful. !Im the moral support person around here. SOmetimes it is natural for me, other times it is exhausting. It all depends on how long the support is needed and if the participants are eager or frustrated. Either way, some of us are well suited for supporting others. I find as bloggers we really support each other well!

    1. Thank you, Debbie! Doing the bathroom gave me a chance to perfect my moral support for when we do the kitchen floor and the little room next to it!

  14. The floor looks great. And Moral support is a necessity and not always easy to provide.
