... but I still like my angel chimes in spite of their slightly bedraggled appearance.
I got this 33 years ago at Ryan's insistence. We were at a little 5 & 10 store (which has sadly closed) and they had one on the counter with the candles lit and the angels whirling around. Because he was two, Ryan was fascinated by the candles but also by the angels and chimes. I think it was $2.99, so of course I bought it.
and the angels have also dulled over time and have their own areas of wear. But I enjoy watching the angels whirl around and dinging the chimes for a few minutes each year. It always reminds me of good memories, like the kids promising to be good if I would light the candles and laughing hysterically when I accidentally installed the angels the wrong way and they flew around backwards.
I've thought about replacing it for several years, but I haven't found another red one like this. Now it seems as if they are all shiny brass and cost about 10 times what I paid. More importantly, they also don't come complete with sweet memories, so a little bit of rust and tarnish is just fine with me.

What lovely memories Bonny. I'd like to see the angels whirling around backwards!! Your piece is much better than anything new.
ReplyDeleteI think we're all a little rusty and tarnished, but who cares? How wonderful that you still have this to bring back those great memories. (And for the record, I'd love to see the angels flying backwards.)
ReplyDeleteThe angels flying backwards is always a good thing! (There was one of these at my nana's house and the angels were always backwards!!) Happy Monday!
ReplyDeletethat is beautiful! reminds me of national lampoon's Christmas Vacation, lol.
ReplyDeleteIt is so much better than new! Rust, tarnish, and sweet memories.
ReplyDeleteOld decorations with memories are always better than new ones! I have sadly never seen one of these, but would love to see the angels flying in any direction. Have a happy Monday, Bonny.
ReplyDeleteIt's a little like some of us -- the beauty has moved inside, but it's still beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou have expressed it in a perfectly wonderful way, Pam. Thank you!
DeleteMy grandmother always had those on her Christmas table. I've also looked for one for myself but have never found one that I liked as much as hers-and now yours.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could find another red one, or maybe two. Then I could give one to each of my kids.
DeleteMy mom had one of those -- I never did. I've only ever seen them made of brass. I love the red!!
ReplyDeleteAngel chimes! Oh, it just wouldn't be Christmas without them! I love yours -- with the red. They're lovely. Angel chimes are a big part of Christmas in my Swedish holiday memories. I have the VERY tarnished and wobbly set that my great grandmother gave my mom when I was just a baby. I tried to polish it up with brass polish, but it didn't really help much. Anyway. It may look wonky . . . but it's full of all my Christmas memories. Thanks for sharing yours!
ReplyDeleteMy comment is almost exactly the same as Kym's! My grandmother had these at her house and I got angel chimes of my own when I first got married. Ours is very tarnished and a little wobbly but we set it up every year and there is definitely something magical about those little bells. I've never seen red ones before!
ReplyDeleteYour red Angel chime is so dear. I've never seen a red version and yours with its many wonderful memories is perfect as it is. My grandmother had one on her table and my siblings and I loved it. For awhile I had one for my kids but with a little help from my son, it eventually fell apart. He found it in a drawer and tried to make it into something else.
