Unraveled Wednesday: 11/12/25

I’m happily joining Kat and the Unravelers today, with progress on Justin's boot socks.

I'm finished with one sock (except for grafting the toe) and well on the way down the leg of the second sock.

And thanks to Araignee's recommendation, I now have a darning egg so grafting the toes will hopefully be faster and neater. This might even be incentive to get the second sock done faster so I can see how well it works.

I will welcome grafting if this slightly trepidatious task can be done faster and more neatly, and who knows? I might even darn a few socks that have needed it for a year or more.

I read four books this week, so I'll be back on Friday with my thoughts on them.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Great suggestion to use a darning egg to neaten those toe stitches. It is far too easy to pull them too tight (which leaves a wonky rib that my toes absolutely feel!) I just finished one book... but it was a magnificent one!

  2. I would happily graft all your toes for you if we lived closer to each other -- it's one of my favorite things to do! Actually, I'm now remembering that in my dream last night, I was grafting two ends of a tube together. That might seem weird to anyone else but knitters! I'm looking forward to your book reviews, and I'm hoping to maybe finish up the second sock of a pair and getting to graft my own toe today.

  3. Like Sarah, I enjoy grafting toes! I think a darning tool would feel wonky to me to use, but I'm looking forward to what you think and how it goes for you. The blue of Justine's socks is so rich and royal looking! (And that is one very BIG foot!!) I'll look forward to your book post on Friday!

  4. I need a darning egg. I've been wanting one for years, but have never picked one up. (Where did you find yours?) And you are just COOKING on those socks! I'm really impressed with how quickly they're coming along. (Of course, your impression may be wildly different . . . )

  5. Oh my golly, that is a lot of FOOT knitting. They look great. You'll have to let us know how the darning egg does. I don't mind grafting, but if there is something to make it even easier, why not try it?

  6. Wonderful progress on those man-sized socks! I hope to hear how using the darning egg works out.

  7. I impressed the heck out of my 3 year old Grand today with that darning egg. We finished off the toes to his socks with it and he was fascinated.

    1. Wonderful! I'm glad to hear it works so well and I hope to be using mine to graft my socks by the weekend.

  8. Those socks are beautiful! I love the color. How big is Justin's foot? John wore size 13 shoes (so does his son), so I understand big feet. That's a lot of sock knitting. Yes, we all need a report regarding the darning egg, please. I read More Than Enough this week, and I absolutely loved it. It was a 5 star book for me.
