I managed to stick with my Duolingo German lessons for 100 days.
I do better on some days than others but it did start to feel more like fun than just something I had to cross off my list, probably around Day 75.
I'll probably stick with it for a while, but I'm not sure I'll be so conscientious about doing it daily. That owl is persistent in his reminders so I may not be able to resist his persuasive powers.
And I would miss important German sentences like these where the bear tells me about his clothing preferences.
These will surely be important if I ever go to Germany and speak with clothes-wearing bears.
Ryan told me that he hopes the next unit is more useful for real life. Depending on the election outcome, I could learn how to say, "Help, my country is a dumpster fire," and "Excuse me, I would like to apply for political asylum." In German, these are "Hilfe, mein Land ist ein Müllcontainerfeuer" and "Entschuldigung, ich würde gerne politisches Asyl beantragen." I'm going to be practicing!
Thank you for starting off my day with a laugh! I can't remember how long my streak was, but I reached the end of Duolingo for French. Yes, apparently there is an end, despite the fact that there is plenty of French I don't know! I want to keep learning, so I'm going to have to look into some other options. And I really hope you don't have to use the line about applying for political asylum!

ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever done anything for 100 days, Bonny (well . . . except Wordle), so BRAVO to you for that accomplishment! And I wonder if "dumpster fire" even needs translation????
ReplyDeleteHilarious! Ryan gets mega points for making the possible election outcome humorous. I didn't think that was possible. I have been thinking I may have to just read during the election results and go to bed early, or I may lose my mind. I did that in 2016 and 2020, and at least I didn't gnash my teeth excessively before I found out who won. And congratulations on completing 100 days, Bonnie. I am having trouble keeping up with the resilience challenge. I have way to much going on lately.

ReplyDeleteI follow a Vietnamese woman on Tik Tok who lives in Germany with her German fiancee and is trying to learn German. Her short videos on the challenges are hilarious. It's always seemed like a difficult language to me so I'm impressed by your progress.
ReplyDeleteBeing of a certain age, I have to admit that whenever I hear the German language being spoken I think of Nazis. Too many old movies on TCM I suppose.
With my poor German pronunciation, I doubt that anyone would mistake me for a Nazi! ;-)
DeleteWhen I was getting ready for Paris after a 30-year break in speaking French, my first priority was ordering in a restaurant - specifically coffee and wine, and NOT (mistakenly) any organ meat :-)
