Unraveled Wednesday: 12/7/22

I'm happy to join Kat and fellow Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday, with an almost completed second sock. I can feel my sock mojo slowly waning with each stripe, so I think it's time to get back to Hitchhikers once I finish this foot.

Reading last week was quite satisfying with a four-star pre-publication copy of You Could Make This Place Beautiful, and a five-star book about bird migration, A World on the Wing. I also read The Angel of Rome, a three-star collection of short stories by Jess Walter that had many of the same issues that I often find with short stories. There were a couple of good stories that grabbed my attention and had me wishing for more, while the rest of the stories were a bit just disappointing. I've just started Antarctica and Walk the Blue Fields. Both of these are short story collections by Claire Keegan (author of the wonderful Foster and Small Things Like These) so I'm looking forward to delving into her writing in the sometimes problematic short story format.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. You're almost there on that foot! I'm knitting a Musselburgh (my version of the hitchhiker, it seems) and I'm reading The Light We Carry.

  2. I think that sock should be finished in no time and you'll soon be on to more Hitchhikers. Funny enough, I've set mine aside for the time being and just started a new pair of socks that needed to be cast on! Still working my way, slowly, though Demon Copperhead -- I really want to have some time with it so I can read more than 10 pages at a time!

  3. You GO with that sock, Bonny! I just finished the new Louise Penny "Three Pines" installment . . . and I couldn't put it down. I'm happy to get my life back after losing it to that book for the last two days while all I did was read . . .

  4. Good thing you are on the short end of the sock! That should take you no time at all and you will soon find yourself on those glorious Hitchhiker rows! :)

I have added several books you list to my TBR list!

  5. I love that sock! The colors are great and you will be finished it in no time at all and back to your beloved Hitchhiker. I, of course, am still knitting socks (and dreaming of other projects, but trying to focus on finishing socks). Always good to see what you are reading...I'm going to check out the links now!

    1. Once I saw on goodreads how much you enjoyed it, I knew I would also. A World on the Wing and An Immense World are two of the best books I've read this year!

  9. The stripes in that sock are so nice and crisp. I love the colors because they include a blue. I am knitting on Jonah's scarf, hoping to knit more inches this evening. I have Foster on my TBR list. Short stories often leave me dissatisfied but Keegan's writing has a spare quality to it that could lend itself to a short story.

  10. I'm more of a fan of short stories than you ... especially in a collection - I love seeing how the stories talk to each other (and especially to the title story) and I always read them in the order published. That said, I rarely give a collection 5 stars, but 4 is pretty common. and now I'm excited to check out those collections from Claire Keegan!
