Family "Fishing"

Justin and Ryan both have Pennsylvania fishing licenses and since the four of us hadn't been together in quite a while, we decided to meet at Nockamixon Lake, a large PA state park about halfway between us.

It was a spur-of-the-moment thing on Saturday, so I picked up some pizza and headed over to meet the rest of the family.

Justin prides himself on being the real fisherman of the family, so he set up three poles and we sat down to chat, watch the poles for any action, and watch the people on paddle boards and kayaks.

We watched the poles, chatted, and ate pizza for several hours. There was also some knitting going on, but since the poles had bells attached to them, I didn't have to watch them too carefully.

Eventually, it got dark and the mosquitoes found us, so we packed up and headed home after a not very successful fishing trip. (There was not even a nibble!) But it was a success as a family get-together and I think that's more important than the number of fish caught. I've learned that with these guys, it's oftentimes better to call it "fishing" even if your primary goal is just to get together.

I hope your weekend was a good one and your week is off to a good start!

  1. I have never been fishing (it's not really a pastime in my family), but my impression of it has always been that the objective isn't usually to catch fish but rather to have some peaceful time in nature, with or without others. I'm glad you thought to bring the pizza so you weren't relying on what you caught to feed you all!

  2. What a lovely way to spend the day, Bonny! I am sorry got no nibbles, but what a fun to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and good conversation!

  3. My husband was a very serious, lifelong fisherman before he became unable to go fishing. He always said it was about "fishing, not catching". It looks like a wonderful day, and what a great idea to take pizza!

  5. Sounds like a great day! You know how I feel about state parks - any journey there is time well spent. I haven't been to Nockamixon (yet) but it looks like a biggie. Lots of hiking, but most of it mixed-use trails that allow horseback riding (my least favorite type of trail). Looks like the leaves are starting to suggest a change over there, too.

  6. As a child I loved fishing on our family vacations. Later in life I was talking with my father and he said, "You always were the one (of 4 kids) that loved to fish." "Dad, I've got to tell you a secret...I loved to fish because I looked busy and you have this thing about finding work for anyone who isn't busy." (Truth)

    1. That was very clever of you (and I love that you eventually told your father)!

  7. I love that bit about calling it fishing even if it's not really fishing. I'm so glad you could all be together for a a day of fishing (LOL) and pizza.

  8. That's what I call "the essence of fishing" -- the best part, in my opinion. XO

  9. How lovely! I would adore having my kids all together but I just don't think that's going to happen in my near future. Sad but true. Loved this moment you had with them!!

  10. A-ha! If calling an outing fishing brings you together then fishing it is. I'm glad you were able to be together. Pizza is the perfect spur of the moment picnic.
