Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, today with two non-Rikke hats. One is done, and I hope to finish the second one later today or tomorrow.

After that, I would be quite happy if I could complete just one more Rikke hat. It would be for Justin's girlfriend, and since they've been together a year, it's about time I knit something for her. I'm not sure she'll even like a handknit hat, but I think I'll enjoy knitting one for her.

I finished two books last week, but neither one was really the book for me. How to Be a Good Creature had some wonderful naturalist observations on animals like emus and octopuses, but there were many more jarring memories of the author's grief at the death of her pets. The Night Circus was a truly intriguing premise, but for me, it failed to live up to its initial promise. I'm currently reading a pre-publication copy of The Red Lotus. I've been reading this before bed, so you can possibly understand my slow progress. As always, you can click on individual books in the sidebar on the right for more detailed reviews.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I am waiting on my yarn for my Rikke hat, yet to be started. Hopefully, it will get here before Christmas. I need that hat now. It's cold! I am sure, even if you are not, that Justin's girlfriend would love a handknit hat from you. I am finishing up Educated, and I have enjoyed it. I hope to finish it today. Then I need to start some prep for Christmas dinner, make cookies, clean my dirty house, etc. I hope both of us enjoy a lovely and productive Wednesday.

  2. I think anyone can appreciate a hand-knit hat. It's not too personal an item, and who doesn't like having a warm head on a cold day?

I'm sorry you didn't love The Night Circus, but I can recognize it's not for everyone. I just started her new book, and if you didn't like The Night Circus, you probably won't like this one, so you can save yourself the wait on that one.

  3. Nice hats Bonny! I want to knit some (maybe after Christmas?) - I should dig through my stash which does have a few skeins that are not fingering weight - lol. I thought The Night Circus was ok - not great, but ok. I started The Starless Sea and didn't really get into it, so let it fly back to the library. I am really liking "Dutch House" though!!

  4. I think you know that I adored The Night Circus but I agree that it's flawed. I'm not sure you'll like The Starless Sea. I would suggest starting it but if you don't get caught up in it just let it go.

  5. I channeled some of your knitting mojo and cast on my first Rikke last night! (9 ribs in and think this is a "readable" knit - meaning, I can knit and read at the same.time!)

  6. I have a feeling . . . Justin's girlfriend will love a Rikke hat! It's a great pattern . . . and, hey! Everybody needs a hat! :-) I just started my last hat for Christmas. Hope I can finish on time! (And I didn't quite "get" all the hype about The Night Circus.) XO

  7. I had the same reaction to The Night Circus. Interesting, but not up to the hype.

  12. Great hats. I think a hat is a wonderful gift. You choose such pretty colors. I didn't think The Night Circus was great either. I haven't decided whether or not to read The Starless Sea. May all your Christmas knitting hat dreams come true! At the last minute - Sunday - I decided I need to knit one more gift - a pair of fingerless mitts. Then I knit half of the first one and it was really small. This recipient may get one fingerless mitt with the promise of a second. I need to have it done by Sunday!

  13. I'm sure she will love a knitted hat from you! I'm still slogging on my poncho, reading Tara Road by Maeve Binchy (easy travel reading) (675 pages - rut ro) and listening to Crooked House by Agatha Christie!

  14. I agree that Justin's girlfriend would enjoy having a warm hat from you. I'm trying to finish a hat for myself, Fair Isle style cashmere and angora. I am spoiled. (I should knit something for Smith, but another unworn hat stuck in the closet doesn't appeal.
