Three on Thursday

Joining Carole and friends for Three on Thursday, today with three random things.

1.  I received this in an email from my credit card company just yesterday.

The words "recent airline ticket purchase on your credit card" had me quickly checking my account to see what unauthorized purchases might be there, but thankfully there weren't any. I did purchase an airline ticket in February, flew in March, and had been back for two and a half months before I got this email. Thanks for the good wishes, Chase, but try to stay current.

2.  As the mother of two boys, I often felt as if I was suffering from TMT (Too Much Testosterone) syndrome when the boys were at home and I lived with three men. I recently painted our small half bath, and Justin sent me this, wondering if I was interested in any further wall decorations:

Some things just don't change.

3.

I was reading an article about Ani DiFranco when I came across the word fricative. I looked it up and fell down the rabbit hole of phonetics. It means "denoting a type of consonant made by the friction of breath in a narrow opening, producing a turbulent air flow", which is interesting and descriptive, but then I discovered affricate, sibilants, fricative trills, fricative flaps, and so much more. Who knew there was so much to the language process? Probably a linguist or speech pathologist, but certainly not me!

Head on over to Carole's for more Three on Thursday thoughts.

  1. Oh, these are RICH. Thanks so much for sharing this morning! (Now I'm thinking of beginning to use "fricative" as an adjective in place of the word it was describing in the article.) (And I'm really happy I didn't see those wall decals when I was looking for bathroom-renovation inspiration. . . ) XO

  2. Don't you love it when the words for the types of sounds are so descriptive?

Also, that bathroom? Such a boy thing.

  4. After raising two girls, I am learning so much about little boys from my grandson.

  5. Hysterical! And I love the word Fricative. I may join Kym in using it in place of another "f" word. It just sounds good, doesn't it?

  6. Number 3 really caught my eye. My friend Danika and I were just talking about the mechanicals of speech and how different languages form their letters differently in their mouth.

When we learn a new language we sometimes don't get it quite right because our muscle memory wants to form the sounds in our NATIVE language rather than the language we are learning.

  7. Men! Always trying to mark "their" territory. That's a great article on Ani DeFranco as the perfect describe her style! Your rabbit hole sounds like a fun one!

  8. Love it! And Justin...the best. I gotta find a world where I can use these words...on the molding floor I'm guessing they'd be lost! :-) (Ani's word...not so much!)

  9. I grew up with three younger brothers (my sister didn't come along until I was nearly 14) and they would be all for that bathroom wall art!

    1. I grew up with just a younger sister, so I was completely clueless when it came to having boys of my own. They were surely different! :-)

  10. I hate it when I find out a vendor has kept my card information without asking. Doesn't that bother anyone else, or am I the lone person screaming into the void? With all the hacks, that is not reassuring to me.
I love Justin's wall art suggestions; so fitting for a boy's bathroom.
As someone who has a Russian DIL who occasionally tries to teach me phrases, I can identify with speech descriptors. I cannot for the life of me successfully pronounce Russian words.

  11. Oh wow. I received a much more timely email from Chase (like within a day or so) and was quite happy not to have to also inform them of my upcoming adventure. I love that those bathroom words are rendered in such a fancy font! Oh, that's an intriguing rabbit hole...

  12. :-) I really love that wall art ... maybe the little boys are rubbing off on me?! I gave up all the #$#%# words about 10 years ago and I haven't looked back (but "fricative" would be a great way to break the habit!) ... are you able to plan another trip west yet?

  13. Oh yes boys. Some things do not change although my daughter hung right in their with her brother for awhile. Otherwise I like the colors of that little bathroom.

  15. There's a lot going on with each of these. Not sure that bathroom lettering would fly around here!
