Hi, Ho, Hitchhiker!

Sorry for this odd photo, but I was trying to show that I knit this one with 53 teeth and an 81" wingspan.
Hopefully you get the idea despite the poor photo, but it was the best of the 40 or so that I took.

I've been thinking about things that make me happy and one of these is my Hitchhikers. They're all on Ravelry, but I don't think I've shared many of them here. I wear one of them almost every day during the winter, and I love the warmth of having one wrapped around my neck. I'll try to remember to take photos so you can see what a useful and lovely pattern it is, and why you should knit one (or two or more) of your own! :-)

Today's Hitchhiker is Long Trip Alone. I knit this one back in 2015 when Justin drove 2300 miles to Montana, spent three weeks there, and drove back. It's a well-known fact that knitters are able to knit their loved ones safely home, so that's what I did with this one. Knitters may also be able to protect their sons from grizzly bears, as I remember knitting long into the night after Justin texted me that he was carrying his wallet so he could be identified in case of a grizzly attack.

The beautiful Colinette Jitterbug yarn outweighs my memories of grizzly bears, so it's a shame it has been discontinued. I did find 14 pages of skeins that people are willing to sell on Ravelry, so I might be able to knit another Jitterbug Hitchhiker some day. But first, I should probably finish the two or three (or maybe more) others that I've got yarn for.

  1. Would you believe that I still haven't knit one? I don't even remember if I've bought the pattern. I really think I need to make myself one, one of these days.

  2. Yes to Hitchhikers! I think I have made seven? I love the way it handles variegated yarn. I always fall for the beautiful skeins and then find they pool...except on Hitchhiker (and Reyna as another great shawl for variegated). This blue one is lovely. I miss Jitterbug too but I'm not buying yarn this year. :)

    1. I agree! I think it's the perfect pattern (unless you dislike endless garter stitch), but I really enjoy the meditative knitting. I'm working on my 13th, and have plans and yarn for more!

  3. I do believe I'm convinced and I need to make a Hitchhiker! Also, I would've stayed up all night knitting after a text like Justin sent you (that's the kind of text Colin would send)! It is nice to know we can knit people safely home or knit them out of danger.

  4. I love it, Bonny!!! It's just perfect -- the size, the color, and your beautiful smile. XO I am in the no-Hitchhiker-YET camp. I love endless garter stitch, though, and I have some lovely yarn that would be perfect. Soon, I'm thinking. Soon I will move on over to the Love-Hitchhiker camp.

  5. The size and endless color choices make Hitchhiker the perfect go to pattern. It's just the style I love to wrap around my neck daily during the winter cold. When I saw your hitchhiker picture I thought-Yay! Bonny IS back!

  6. Ditto what Margene said - it's good to SEE you back! And like Kym said, I'm also a Hitchhiker virgin thinking this might be the year I finally try one. Happy Tuesday!

  8. Your Hitchhiker is gorgeous and having a variety of colors must make it easy to keep warm in this cold weather! I've not make one yet, but maybe this year!

  10. I love it, Bonny! And I really love the picture of your smiling face. :) I admit that I enjoy endless garter stitch because it is meditative, and it's not a big deal if I get distracted. I have not knit a Hitchhiker, but you are making me reconsider that decision. But I have many other knits I need to finish first, and my knitting time is so limited these days. Thank you for showing me your gorgeous wrap. I'm glad you are feeling better or just faking it until you make it!
