Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.

My mother-in-law hates winter weather because she's very afraid of falling. She was complaining about it last week and told me, "If it's not snowing, it's dark." Today you get a photo of my Frostbite Fighter Sockhead Cowl in progress that shows sometimes darkness and snow happen at the same time. Putting my knitting in a snowy tree also showed me that it passed the weather test. I'm knitting this at a tight enough gauge that it should be fairly waterproof and be able to fight frostbite as I had hoped.

I'm enjoying knitting this and have been thinking about what stash I might use for one for me. I have some ideas, but my blue gradient hitchhiker is also calling me "Finish me, Bonny. You're so close and I want to be worn instead of stuffed in your knitting bag." I don't think I can ignore its plaintive cries much longer.

I finished two books this week, The Power and The Queen of Hearts, and am still reading The Woman Who Smashed Codes. Links are in the right-hand sidebar if you're interested in any of them, but I highly recommend The Power. Compelling, interesting, well-written, and disturbing, it may be the best book I read this year ( I just can't confidently declare that already in the middle of January).

What are you making and reading?

  1. This weather has definitely made trying to get well lit photos a challenge! But, I love how well it blends with the tree and it looks so warm! I have to pick up The Woman Who Smashed Codes from the library and can't wait to begin reading it!

  2. my mother in law did fall and my father in law was asleep and did not hear her yells. (she could not get up) luckily the neighbors saw her laying across her doorway and came to the rescue!! I hope now she ALWAYS uses her walker....Anyways falling is a real fear and they could easily break something (she did not). Love your knit and that you read a lot, I need to read more. and knit more.

  3. The cowl looks great, especially the “tight enough gauge” to make it more waterproof. Such a winter we are having, reminds me of Wisconsin of my youth. We got wet all the time.
Sweater-knitting-time is here for me, I am working diligently on my Easel sweater. But I bet by the time I get done it will be warmer, and I fear it is somewhat bigger than I planned. Oh well, I can snuggle.
Reading: unusual “Solar Bones” is very flowing, author writes as if we hear his thoughts. I like it a lot. Also, still on “Sing Unburied Sing” now that I have my own copy after returning one to the library unintentionally. I’m not sure if I understand the ghosts’ parts in this novel, but it is very well written.

    1. Here's hoping you get your sweater done in time to wear it at least once or twice before it's too warm. If not, I bet fall and winter will be back again! I'm waiting impatiently for Sing, Unburied, Sing from the library, but so are lots of other people.

  4. Over coffee this a.m. I was wondering about your gradient blue hitchhiker! Now I know...The cowl looks fabulous. Love the color(s) in the yarn. Frostbite proof is a good thing! The Power looks very good. I've just added my name to the hold list on Overdrive for that at 2 libraries!

  5. Your mother-in-law is a smart cookie. It's snowing here today and I'd rather be home by the wood stove but I'm at work!

  6. Love your cowl. We definitely need frostbite-proof items this year!

  7. Oh winter weather is crazy right? I'm thankful today is grey and rainy and a bit of a thaw, the rest of my state is getting snow.

  8. Well, I agree with your MIL, I also hate winter weather. It's not good for my mood, and I am somewhat intolerant of the cold. I have Reynauds, and it can be annoying. But it is what it is, right? This winter has already been a big challenge for me. Last night it was 3 degrees here, the night before 8 degrees. I have needed one of those Frostbite Fighter Sockhead Cowls! It looks great, by the way, I bet your son will love it. I wondered about your Hitchhiker, but I was afraid to ask.:) Glad to hear that it is almost finished. I am still reading the Weight of Ink, and I am enjoying it. I am on the hold list for The Power, Sing Unburied, Sing, and several other books that are popular now.

    1. Our weather is supposed to warm up to the 40s by the weekend, and I hope yours does also! Never fear, the Hitchhiker is sitting right next to me and will be finished soon(ish). I've just been trying to get Justin's cowl done so he can use it soon. He's outdoors all day in upstate NY and needs some defense against frostbite. Sounds like you do, too!

  9. Winter is hard on the older folks. I feel for them. Still I love the sight of our snow. it is so beautiful on the landscape here. The cardinals in the bush just POP with their red color against the snow and blue sky. I love your cowl set against the evergreens. I cast on a fuzzy hat today. Simple joys

    1. I shoveled snow and ice today and managed to fall twice, so that was a good lesson that I also need to careful. My bruised butt and knee will be good reminders!

  10. Warm hats will certainly be appreciated this time of year!

When I had two projects that are calling out, I work on each one through a television show and then switch it up. Love goes around to ALL the knits that way.

  11. My book group has chosen to read The Power this year . . . in March. I'm not sure I can hold out til then, and may dig in right away! (I could use a good book right about now. My last two were total duds. . . ) I think you need to listen to your Hitchhiker and git'r'dun!!! XO

  12. I am pretty fit and steady on my feet, but I fear falling more and more every year! But it's not just outside... my grandmother tripped over some laundry in the basement and fell once (broke her hip... Grandpa didn't hear her... ugh!).

Anyway, I'm glad that cowl is coming along. But, oh yeah, there was that Hitchhiker happening! :)

  13. The cowl looks like it passes the snow test for sure. Great photo. Interesting books. We are having a bit of a warm up this week and it is welcome. I look forward to getting out for a nice long walk.

  14. Is this maybe the longest break you've taken from Hitchhiker knitting? I do think it's time to get back to it! and I'm so glad you loved The Power (you listened, right?) I think it might be my next listen.

  15. My ADD kicked in earlier this week and I wandered off to investigate The Power...very interesting! I may make that my next listen too as I should finish A Gentleman in Moscow soon. (Love, love, love!)

  16. Falling is a huge risk (says she who lives in a townhouse with two flights of stairs) especially on icy walks! May I join your Hitchhiker in begging you to finish? I'd love to see how it turns out, but I'm guessing she'll be bluetiful! The Power is going to hold up as one of the best of the year. I just know it!
