Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.

This photo is a little over four inches of ribbing on my next cowl for Justin, Frostbite Fighter. I'm actually done with the ribbing and have started the next section of rounds and rounds of stockinette, but was running out of light yesterday afternoon and ran out to take a few photos. (*Scroll down to see the rest of the story.) I love the yarn and don't mind the mindless meditative knitting at all ... yet. There are still 14 more inches to go, so I've still got plenty of time for a little whining about endless stockinette and too much ribbing.

I'm reading The Queen of Hearts and listening to The Woman Who Smashed Codes and The PowerI think I'm going to have to do some monogamous reading to actually finish something. I'm splitting my time between them now, and while they're all very good in their own ways, I'm not making much progress with any of them. So no more fooling around with multiple books this week; I'm going to pick one and be faithful.

*The rest of the story:

This is the photo you take when you accidentally drop the ball of yarn you have been carefully trying not to drop.

This is how far the ball of yarn rolls despite your efforts to chase it.

What are you making and reading?

  1. I've heard from several people lately about The Woman Who Smashed Codes, clearly I need to investigate this one! I'm still knitting my peace scarf - well, I haven't been knitting at all, obviously, or it would be DONE. I'm reading The Weight of Ink and predict I will finish today at lunch time.

  2. your name is aptly given. I love the muted shades of brown and the simplicity of a rib stitch. He will love it!

  3. Oh, my! I can just picture your yarn-dropping/yarn-chasing incident, thanks to your excellent photo documentation. :-) I've just started reading Reservoir 13 - which is a drop-everything-and-read selection for me because it just came in from Overdrive. At the same time, I'm slogging along with the selection from my book group this month, Bettyville (which I don't really recommend). In knitting? I'm on the first sleeve of my sweater, so I'll join you in the endless-stockinette camp. XO

  4. Some unraveling lately that I have done - knitted about an inch more than needed on a Easel sweater, but I am enjoying it so much I don’t care, now that I am almost done with my earlier post-holiday obligations. (Fingerless gloves are quite snarly).
Reading several things that are quite good #1. Sing Unburied Sing, #2. Ghost Road (last of a trilogy that I had read a couple years ago), and listening to #3. The Book of Joy — to counteract the first two books, though this takes more time to assimilate. Yes, I do read 2-4 books at a time, reading whichever one depends on my mood and really does help my mind be active, which along with my several projects in knitting and a bit of swimming exercise keeps my brain young. Sorta. Hopefully.

    1. I'm with you on the exercise, reading, and knitting sorta hopefully keeping our bodies and minds young, or at least in good working order!

  5. Last night I finished a pair of fingerless mitts for my 19 year old niece and started a cute stocking cap for my 20 month old great niece. I'm reading Persuasion by Jane Austen. I didn't like Jane Austen when I was younger and finally read two of her novels for summer bingo and found I really enjoyed them. My quest is to read all six of them...but at my leisure...no time limit!
I can just picture you chasing that ball of yarn...if it were me, I'd have a dog chasing it!

  6. Ha! Well, at least it was the ball of yarn that unraveled and not the cowl! And I love the "accidental" shot that you got. The yarn is very pretty and I predict this will be another winner cowl. I'm plugging away on Colin's sock (still single - lol) and reading several different things. forgot to mention on my blog the book Fletch and I are reading after dinner: Wild Ones by Jon Mooallem. It's an interesting read - not necessarily the best choice for reading out loud, but we are about 2/3 finished, so will finish it up!

  8. The cowl looks great! I think the yarn is a perfect color. Your picture was funny. Isn't that always the case? Remember the song by 38 Special - Hold on Loosely? Well, that your song this week, Bonny. "Hold on loosely, but don't let go!" I drop things a lot, and I sing that song to myself quite a bit. I need to do some monogamous reading myself this week. I have too many reading balls in the air, and at this rate, they will all be expired at Overdrive, not that they will disappear. I will just turn off the wifi to my devices, but it puts a crimp in my style to do that. Have a day full of contentment, Bonny.

    1. I was trying to be so careful, but at least I dropped the yarn instead of my phone, and hopefully provided a little entertainment for my neighbors. I'm working on a report with a tight deadline this afternoon, but I'll feel quite contented when I finally finish - hopefully soon!

  10. Oh, I love the photo of the escapee - ball of yarn. How many times has that happened somewhere to most of us? The cowl is lovely. I am knitting on a top down raglan pullover - I think and reading Gathering from the Grassland.

  11. I got quite the giggle out of your escaping yarn ball. Hope it was okay.

I'm a monogamous reader. I just finished Eleanor Olipant is Completely Fine and getting ready to start the Best of Food Writing 2016.

  12. the rest of the story made me laugh out loud - I guess snow and shoveled sidewalk make for smooth rolling! Good luck with your monogamy problem - I usually have one book to read and one to listen to ... thanks to a few hours of focused time with each, I finished two books this week! (have you read Sing, Unburied, Sing? powerfully good!)

  13. The case of the escaping yarn ball!!! HOW do they travel so far and where do they think they're going? Do they not realize they are tethered and cannot escape no.matter.what? Sometimes I wonder.

  14. Rolling yarn balls! A physics class should study them I swear! I'm monogamous too...reading one (No Exit) listening one (A Gentleman in Moscow) ...though the reading gets far less attention generally which is really a crime!
