Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.

It seems like I post yet another picture of my (unfinished) Birthday Cake Hitchhiker every Wednesday, and every week I wonder when I am ever going to finish this thing. I did a little math to try and answer that question.

I currently have 49 teeth and 200 stitches, and plan to finish with 56 teeth. Each tooth (an 8 row repeat) increase the stitch count by 4 stitches, so I was trying to calculate how many stitches I have left to knit. After a couple of attempts, I finally arrived at an answer of approximately 13,696 stitches. I'm sure there's an easier/better/more precise way of figuring this out, but I'm happy that my approximation tells me why it's taking me so long!

I finished Magpie Murders, but since I know quite a few people are currently reading it or plan to read it, you'll get no spoilers from me. My thoughts (also spoiler-free) are here if you're interested. I've started two new books, and both are great so far. Where the Water Goes is an interesting, educational, and eye-opening book about "where our water comes from and where it goes". Specifically, it's about the allocation of the water in the Colorado River, and it's a fascinating story. Safe as Houses is a book that I happened upon at the library, and after reading the first story, I can tell it's going to be perfect for my "Collection of short stories" square. I really like the covers of both books, and what's inside is even better.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. I'm still knitting on the baby blanket although I have made a lot of progress in the last two days. I haven't been reading as much as usual, I can't seem to concentrate right now.

  2. I agree, the covers of those books are indeed great! And, someone else mentioned Safe As Houses last week, I do not remember who... but your book recommendations are always some of the best books I read, so both of these are going on my read list! Thank you!

And, I love your knitting maths!! That is going to be one beautiful Hitchhiker, no matter how long it takes!

  3. I love your hitchhiker :) I am so so so close to the next chart and yet still have a few rows to go... Love the books you are currently reading and the cover of your kindle.

  4. That is some interesting math!! It's going to be lovely... whenever it's finished! (Luckily, you're not in a race. Haha!) I am knitting and reading the same old stuff...

  5. It's the process, I'm also telling myself as I knit on and on and a seemingly endless shawl. I am about 2/3s through the Magpie Murders and I was brought up short by the change from the book to the present day. I had hoped for the last chapters to be found and the story finished. I'll chalk it up to a fun read.

  6. Excellent "showing your work" on that math problem! :-) I'm listening to When Breath Becomes Air, reading South of Broad and knitting that same sock. Vacation begins Saturday...hopefully something will get finished over that week!

  7. Oh your hitchhiker and my socks...same old, same old. But Pretty! I laughed at your math. I did the same exercise when I was knitting Elevation (my last shawl) and when I saw the number of stitches left it almost gagged me! But I did finish it and am so happy I did. Your Hitchhiker will be gorgeous when finished...no matter when that is.

I am waiting for Magpie Murders to come available on Overdrive. your new read look really good.

  8. I love the color of your Hitchhiker! I'm still knitting on my TTLMKAL, I just started clue 4...even though I'm slow, I am enjoying the pattern.

  9. I look forward to seeing that Hitchhiker every week and I'm glad it will be around for a little longer ;-) I read your review of Magpie Murders this morning; I'm glad you rounded up and filled your 500 pages square!

  10. Well even if it feels like it is taking a long time, your Hitchhiker is truly pretty!

  11. Knitting the same old thing at a snail's pace. I haven't really had time to knit much. I am reading The Thirst by Jo Nesbo. I love all his Harry Hole books.

    1. It seems like many of us are becalmed in the August doldrums "knitting the same old thing at a snail's pace"! That's okay, we can all be in good company together!

  12. I'm not knitting at all, so you've got me there! I just finished Magpie Murders this morning. I thought it fun and rather clever -- and kind of perfect for late summer reading. I'm about tolaunch in to BearTown (having finally risen to the top of the incredibly long "hold" list at the library), and I'm listening to Last Night in Twisted River (John Irving).

  13. That number of stitches is impressive!
I liked Magpie Murders more than you did, but I think you make some good points on Good Reads.

    1. My problems with Magpie Murders were probably more mine than the author's. My expectations may have been too high, and the story within a story idea I was so excited about didn't work very well. But if Horowitz writes more of the Atticus Pund series, I think I'll read those!

  14. Hang in there with that Hitchhiker. I love the colors in the yarn. Yes to August doldrums.
