Friday Letters

Today I'm taking my virtual fountain pen in hand to write a few Friday letters. I've been to the grocery store, come across something unique and interesting, and had some reactions. You might, too.

======

Dear Utrecht Fish People,

I can't thank you enough for your fish doorbell! There is just something so undeniably fun about staring at an underwater camera, hoping to see a fish so I can ring the doorbell. I've enjoyed myself quite a bit, sitting with my knitting, waiting, and watching in hopes of letting a fish through on their journey to spawn. It would be a real accomplishment if you could teach the fish to ring the doorbell themselves, but until that happens, I'm happy to help.

Sincerely,

A fish-watching friend

======

Dear Peeps,

Last week it was Protein Pop-Tarts, this week it's some sort of meta Pop-Tart flavored Peeps? I'll admit that I was a little bit tempted to buy a box just so I could see how bad they tasted, but I'm fairly sure they are just as bad as I'm imagining.

I would also like to voice my objections over the Dr. Pepper flavor. Dr. Pepper is my favorite soda and it should not be tarnished by using it as some sort of marketing gimmick to sell your chick-shaped blobs of marshmallow. But if I do happen to see some of these at half price after Easter, I may not be able to resist. (But only if they're half price!)

 I can't wait to see what you come up with next. (Maybe Protein Peeps!),

 A Dr. Pepper lover who only imbibes in liquid form

======

I wish you a wonderful weekend, a Happy Passover or Happy Easter if you celebrate either one, and maybe a handful of just the good-tasting jellybeans!

  1. The only thing Peeps are good for is decorating an Easter basket. Once they are stale they do make for a nice chewy bite or two before they are tossed in the trash. I’m not sure why anyone buys them for their flavor. I’m not even sure the human body can digest them. Happy Easter!

    1. My oldest son could never eat anything with a face (including candy) so he always left his Peeps in his Easter basket forever. It took me a while to understand his eating habits and I finally learned not to buy them.

  2. Well, a fish doorbell is not a thing I would have imagined existed! Though I can't say I'm surprised by flavored Peeps. I think I'll stick with the regular-old Peeps, though, thank you very much. We were discussing them at Passover dinner and talking about roasting them for making s'mores, something I hadn't thought to do before. Somehow I don't think matzah is a good stand-in for graham crackers, though, so I'll need to wait until after Passover to try it out.

  3. A fish doorbell... who knew!! (and leave it to the Dutch for this fun... I am currently watching with almost 2000 others, lol) And I saw something about the new "flavors" of peeps but I did not realize the flavors included pop tarts and carbonated beverages! Just no... peeps should just be peeps!

  4. I spotted a fish and rang the bell!!! Yay me. Now I'm going to forget about it - that could be a real time suck! I will be picking up some Jelly Belly beans today - Colin's favorite - and maybe a chocolate bunny for Mailing. Iris' Easter gifts are all non-edible (at least they are supposed to be...).

  5. Just yesterday, another friend sent me a note about the fish doorbell. What a fun idea.

  6. I did not have enough patience to wait for a fish. I don't generally think of myself as impatient, but there you have it. Peeps. I have never understood the popularity of Peeps. Even as a kid, I would have much preferred those big colored marshmallows. They are a legend in how to market a questionable product! Fun fact, Peeps have been around since 1953, when it took 27 hours to make them by hand. Now it only takes 6 minutes by machine. Is that progress? LOL

  7. Oh, Bonny! Thank you for sharing the fish doorbell. Although I had no luck during my first "viewing," I know I'll be back next time I'm on hold while close to my computer. ;-) And ohmygod Dr. Pepper Peeps??? Dr. PEEPER????? Enjoy the weekend.

  9. The fish doorbell is quite the deal. You know I've never like "Peeps" and neither did my kids. What will the marketing people think of next? I probably don't want the answer to my question.

  10. I found that fish doorbell through the NYTimes new happy moments (or whatever it's called) newsletter and I've watched but yet to see a fish. I live in hope of it, though! As for peeps, they should only the originals: marshmallow flavored and yellow.
