Bits and Pieces: January 2026

I've got a few topics that I could post about but none of them are really enough for a whole post of their own. It's clearly time for a Bits and Pieces post.

  • The photo above shows the Milford Bridge, where I usually cross the Delaware River when traveling to Pennsylvania. There was a light dusting of snow, along with the early stages of ice forming on the river. Around here, people call it “scab ice” (yuck!), though the proper term is anchor ice. Anchor ice typically forms in flowing water when supercooled, loosely packed bits of ice collide and stick together, eventually attaching to the riverbed. Over time, this creates a bottom layer of ice that may later break free and float to the surface. There’s much more to say about how ice forms in rivers, but that's probably quite enough for now.
  • I get to go look for wedding dresses tomorrow! I haven't mentioned it here yet, but Jess and Justin got engaged this past fall. Their wedding is scheduled for October 24th and I think much of the planning (for the big stuff, anyway) is done. Justin had one request, that they not get married in a hotel, resort, or "fancy" wedding venue. They've chosen a place in the Poconos that is rustic and everything can be outside if the weather permits. Jess is looking at dresses on Saturday, and I'm kind of excited to go along. Her mother lives in Ohio so she won't be there, but Jess has also invited her maid of honor, one of the vets she works with, and John's youngest sister. I may end up just holding the phone in case Jess facetimes with her mom, but I think it will be a fun experience. The bridal salon website says to plan on two and a half hours and their dresses start at $3500. I chose my dress in 20 minutes after work and paid $200 in 1981, but things have certainly changed since then!
  • Thank goodness John is traveling to Florida later this month. He used to travel quite a bit when he was working and I got used to it. It's been an adjustment since he retired and my alone time is much harder to come by. He has a good friend (David) that lives in Orlando and is quite ill with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and hypertension. David just got a pacemaker and is on the list for a heart transplant, so John thought it would be a good idea to visit him. John does not do very well in cold weather (he tends to nap too much) and when his sister offered to go with him (she has friends there and they will go to Disney World), he agreed. I have four days to myself, no dinners to prepare, and I only have to take John and his sister to Trenton airport. That's much easier than driving to Newark, so I'm really looking forward to my mini-vacation.
  • I've been looking for small things that make me happy, and one of them is feeding the birds. Justin got me a small feeder that I have attached to the kitchen window and I love seeing the finches (and occasionally a cardinal or two) come to the feeder when I'm sitting at the kitchen table. I've started feeding them sunflower kernels which they seem to like best. A five pound bag lasts about five months and that is a small price to pay for multiple daily finch visits that always bring me joy.
  • Another thing that has made me happy is spinach dip. I made some as an appetizer for Christmas lunch and we've gotten a bit addicted to it. I've made three batches of it since Christmas, but it may be time to stop. I can rationalize and say there is lots of spinach in it, but it's also got plenty of fat from cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. We ate some of it with French bread or crackers, but this last batch is being enjoyed with carrots and celery sticks. More vegetables!
That's it for my bits and pieces. Feel free to let me know any interesting things going on in your world, especially if they are making you happy and maybe even healthy. I'd love to replace my spinach dip obsession with something that's a bit better for me. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Yes, to feeding the birds! I have been doing this for years, and I really enjoy it. Once again, I have learned something from your posts. I never contemplated river ice, but I am now. Going wedding dress sounds like fun, but like you, I am appalled at the prices. My mother made my wedding dress for my first marriage, and it was lovely and cheap to make. John and I went to a justice of the peace with 3 family members and my best friend. It was the perfect wedding! And, I , too have been eating spinach dip lately -lol. I eat the kind made with greek yogurt and a bit of mayo. It's a slight downgrade, but it is still good. I have to watch my dip intake. Since I am alone, I could eat some kind of dip for dinner every day.

  2. Wedding dress shopping! How exciting. I got to travel to NYC with Daughter for her dress. She was a big fan of Say Yes to the Dress so we made a weekend of it and went to that shop. It was thrilling to meet all the stars of the show as they helped Daughter decide on what was the perfect dress for her. The only hiccup was when my credit card company turned down my $4000 charge because it was out of character for me. A few phone calls set it all right but boy, was I embarrassed! I know now to always give the bank a heads up before I go on a crazy spree. I made my own wedding dress for my first wedding in the 70's and for my second, I walked into Marshall's and found something off the rack. Times have changed but I loved every minute of Daughter's "fancy" event which was also in October.

    1. I think it will be fun to look at dresses, but I'll have to keep an open mind and my mouth shut. It's not my wedding, and I will just have to get used to all the expensive hoopla that seems to go along with it. I don't think I'll be paying for the dress, but may be contributing money towards a honeymoon fishing trip.

    2. Laughing at Araignee's hiccup - my sister once had her card refused when she was online shopping for mother-of-the-groom dresses. When she called her card company they said, "Ma'am, someone has your card and is going crazy ordering party dresses." To which she had to say -- "that would be ME!" I hope you have fun dress shopping, Bonny. I got to go along on a wedding dress shopping trip at Thanksgiving with my daughter's future sister-in-law. It was in some ways more fun than for my own daugher, as I didn't have any skin in the game. But I did have to behave myself ;-)

  3. Congratulations on gaining a daughter! That's so nice that Jess asked you to come dress shopping with her. Clearly she's a lovely woman and will be a great addition to your family. I have thought about getting a bird feeder like that, but we have so many squirrels (that Ruthie likes to chase) that I'm not sure it'd actually attract that many birds. I agree with Becky's suggestion to use Greek yogurt in dip; Trader Joe's makes a kale/spinach/Greek yogurt dip that's really good. But didn't you hear about the new food pyramid and how we're ending the war on saturated fats? It's now apparently healthy to eat full-fat dairy! (Rolls eyes.)

  4. Oh Bonny!! How exciting for Justin and Jess! I predict you will have lots of fun on Saturday (and even more fun with John off in Florida!) I bought some spinach at the grocer yesterday, my plans were to use it in a bean soup but I the lure of spinach dip is strong! (and I have carrots, celery, and peppers to trick me into thinking I'm being healthy! Ha!) Have a good weekend!

  5. This is exactly the kind of post I need to read this morning! Good news and fun stuff ALL over the place!!! River ice and wedding dress shopping and "alone time" and bird watching/feeding and spinach dip! MORE PLEASE. I'm so excited to hear that Justin and Jess are engaged and that wedding planning is going smoothly. I hope you have a fun time shopping for wedding dresses. (Erin and I have never laughed more together than we did at the bridal shop when we shopped for her dress. I think the "bridal advisors" thought we were FAR TOO opinionated. Just sayin.)

And . . . I'm so glad John is going to visit his old friend NOW. Tom's high school best friend passed away from Parkinsons this fall, and although Tom was aware he'd been diagnosed, he thought - as we often do - that there would be "more time." Regret is painful. Good for John for realizing that.

  6. Thanks for the information about the river ice! I am intrigued and will look to read more about it. I love to see ice in rivers and streams and marshes. It can be so beautiful.

    1. I'm always interested in seeing what ice has formed on the river, and I'm glad someone else is, too! I had to read more about it after the first time I saw the river frozen solid. It doesn't happen very often, just in prolonged periods of cold. Here are a couple of links that might give you more (maybe even too much) information:

  7. What interesting Bits and Pieces. The note about the ice on the river is fascinating and the photo is beautiful. How fun for you to go with Jess to look at wedding dresses and how wonderful for her to ask you. She must be a wonderful young woman. I think a more rustic setting sounds lovely. Yes, times have changed. I had my wedding gown made from a Vogue pattern. The dress was two layers in addition to a slip underneath. In 1977, I think the whole shebang, including paying the seamstress was about $80. Around 2000, we paid a little under $1000 for my daughter's dress but it was a pretty gown.

  8. P.S. My current obsession is Peanut Butter Pretzels from Trader Joe's. I'm not sure they are any healthier but they have just a pinch of sugar in them and pair very well with my morning coffee.

  9. Safe travels for John and his sister. Orlando is a good place to be in January. LOL

I made sugared pecans for a "fancy" salad ------------we've been snacking on the leftovers. I think you can feel pretty virtuous having spinach dip. I'm sure my nuts are much worse for the diet.
