It's the third Thursday of the month so I'd like to welcome you to A Gathering of Poetry. Poetry has become even more important to me recently, so I've been reading a poem a day from several volumes. This seems to be just about enough to maintain a minimum of mental health, and I came across this one. It spoke to me and I hope it says something to you, too.
The Orange
by Wendy Cope
At lunchtime I bought a huge orange –
The size of it made is all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave –
They got quarters and I had a half.
And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It's new.
The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I'm glad I exist.*
*And what else is there?

favorite poems. The more the merrier!
What a wonderful poem! It's simple and easy to understand, but that doesn't diminish its power. It's a great reminder that even the simplest, most mundane things can be a source of happiness.
ReplyDeleteThis is just so fun, Bonny! And yes... I am reading poetry for sanity as well these days! And yes... the poems that key in on the simple things of daily life are the ones that speak loudly to me... because I feel seen... so seen! (even in the little things!) and yes... what else is there!!
ReplyDeleteNow that is just a delight! Thanks for bringing that wonderful beginning to my day. XO
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun poem to remind us that every day doesn't have to be a big deal, sometimes just completing the stuff we need to do and rewarding ourselves with an orange is enough. And that photo is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI keep telling myself that finding even a few seconds of joy in the little things is what carries you through.
ReplyDeleteThat's what's working for me, too. I'm afraid the old days of taking good things for granted are gone.
DeleteWhat a delightful poem. And I agree, a few poems does help to maintain better mental health, even if for a little while.
ReplyDeleteI adore the photo with the poem!!!
