. . . is the day I expand my search for chive plants. I would use chives more if I had a ready source of them at hand and didn't have to buy a bunch every time I made baked potatoes or an omelet. I planted two different types of seeds several months ago, but all I've gotten so far are the spindliest, weakest chives I've ever seen.
I spent last weekend going to Lowe's, Home Depot, and the two (quite pitiful) plant nurseries in our town. I did find herbs - lots of basil, some thyme, rosemary, and even lemongrass and citronella, but no chives anywhere.
But I have a plan today. There is a lovely garden center an hour away, and it happens to be in the same town where John has a doctor's appointment. I called them yesterday and they do have chive plants. I'll be going along with John to his appointment, and then we'll go to the garden center. John likes company but I don't "ride along" very often. For some chive plants and maybe some other delightful surprises at the garden center, it's worth it.
Keep your fingers crossed that my plan works out, and I hope you're having a good Monday!
may you be successful in your chive hunt. We haven't bought anything for the garden but my sister bought us an annual plant that attracts hummingbirds.
ReplyDeleteI will keep my fingers crossed for some Chive Success! (and if that fails, I have some chive blossoms I can send your way... my chives are prolific and hearty!) Also, I wish John a very good doctor's visit!
ReplyDeleteWell, if you were closer, I'd tell you to come on over and I'd give you mine! I have one that has somehow survived for years, since Molly said she liked chives and I bought one. It turns out she actually likes green onions, so we've never really used the chives. Hope you have success today!
ReplyDeleteHappy Chive Hunting!! Hope you are successful. I thought of planting some, but then noticed that our neighbor Rob has an abundance...and the other day he told me to help myself whenever I want!!
ReplyDeleteI really need to plant some herbs. I love fresh herbs in food, and I hate paying the extreme prices they want for them at the store. Also, going to the store every time you need some is so inconvenient! I hope you have a safe trip, John has a good report, and that you are met with an abundance of hearty chive plants. I love chives.
ReplyDeleteI have a big herb pot on my deck that is in sad shape. All I really want is basil but I can never find it around here.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever get to NJ we seem to have all kinds of basil here - regular, lemon, Thai, etc. Just no chives; I've had to come to PA for them.
DeleteGood luck!! I hope you find some other nice goodies at the garden center, too!
ReplyDeleteI hope you found sturdy, healthy chives! and maybe a nice lunch out?! so happy to see your review of Names - I read something really good about it a few weeks back and put it on hold before the line got too long. also, I picked up The Correspondent on Saturday and will be reading it soon! that could be my small good thing ... or it could be that Marc's tomato plants have green tomatoes on them. already!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a wonderful time at the garden center, Bonny. They tend to be my very favorite places!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you brought home! I got basil and parsley last week as those are the 2 herbs I tend to use the most.
