I'm joining Kat and fellow Unravelers today, with a tale of hubris and unraveling. I was approaching what I thought was the end of my Sparkly Match and Move when I failed to read the pattern correctly. I had nine stitches of the sparkly black yarn left and I somehow misinterpreted "Repeat Body Pattern II until no stitches in Color A remain" and I bound off. When the bind-off was wonky, I tried to fix it (to no avail) and finally realized that nine does not equal zero. So I undid the bind off, started to unravel, and then spent much of yesterday afternoon unraveling more.
I'll hopefully get to a recognizable point in the pattern and then continue on from there, but after a frustrating afternoon, I thought it best to pause and pick it up again when I had some renewed patience.
Hubris enters into it because while I was binding off, I was busy imagining the photos I would need to take to show you the yarn and my cast on for my second Match and Move. The best laid plans ... might have to wait until next Wednesday.
I did have a better week in reading and finished three books. Someone Else's Shoes and Small Mercies were very different books, but both were four stars for me. I also finished a pre-publication copy of Under the Storm, a Swedish mystery and coming-of-age novel. The story in this 3.5-star book develops slowly, leaving the reader plenty of time to mull over questions of guilt, innocence, and culpability. It was maybe just a bit too slow for me, but I appreciated that Carlsson has written a deeper and more thoughtful mystery than the usual.

I am sorry to hear about the unraveling; I'm pretty sure we've all been there at some point -- usually in my case it's because I think I know better than the pattern! I'm sure you'll be actually done very soon, though, now that you're back on track.
ReplyDeleteSadly work is so busy this week that I don't have much time for reading or making, but I'm still making my way through The Covenant of Water (I'm a bit past halfway) and working on a baby sweater, which thankfully is growing quickly and giving me some sense of accomplishment.
gotta love when you mis read things! I do it all the time and it's frustrating - I'm wearing my glasses what is going on??? Lovely and cannot wait til next week for the big reveal.
ReplyDeleteOh ugh, Bonny! I read those instructions again and again (and IMO they do not pair up with the schematic image she has at all) And I would add that you need to make sure when you reach the point when you stop increasing on one side, that you need to make sure that your stitch count is divisible by 10... one thing that is wildly obvious is a "point" that is not the same as all the others!
ReplyDeleteI guess I'd best pay super close attention to the instructions once I begin my Hitch on the Move! Sorry about your unraveling. good, though, that you figured out what the issue was and were able to correct it. I've never read anything by Jojo Moyes...maybe I should reconsider?
ReplyDeleteSometimes you just have to put the project down for a little bit before you can start again. It's well worth the fix though. It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh, Knitting Hubris. It bites me in the butt far too often! (Just yesterday I had to unravel one of my potato-chip-dishcloths . . . because my Hubris told me I didn't NEED to count.) (Ha.) I think your sparkly Hitch on the Move is looking great (despite the frustration) -- and I will keep your experience in mind as I cast on for my own later this afternoon. XO

ReplyDeleteWell, damn. I hate it when that happens! Hopefully you're back on track by now and moving forward again with more patience and a bit more attention to the pattern. I'm glad you liked both of those books, too!
ReplyDeleteOh rats. I hope you have found a good starting point for the shawl. It really is very pretty. It is always a good idea for me to set things aside and return when I am not so frustrated. I'm reading Mrs. Dalloway, and just began listening to The Librarian of Burned Books.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's a bummer... hope you've found a spot from which you can continue! I have a lovely shawl that's been marinating for years because I'm unable to find the "spot" -- actually, I think I have TWO of those!
