While I'm at Ryan's shoveling, wheelbarrowing, and raking topsoil, I thought I'd give you a shutter update. John got the bright idea to paint our house shutters blue and he's finished (almost).
They don't look nearly as bright on the house as they did up close, and he even painted the outside window sills blue to match. I still like green the best, but given the scary acrobatics he had to perform on the ladder to replace the second-story shutters on the side, I'm fairly confident they will remain blue as long as we own the house.
I park my car down by the barn and walk up to the house and I noticed something when I got back from some errands yesterday.
That sill at the top is still red. That big grate is the outlet for our attic fan and not easily accessible from inside. That means John would probably need to perform more death-defying acts of bravery on the ladder to reach it and paint it blue. I'm sure not getting the ladder out (I can't even lift it without help) and I'm definitely not climbing up there to paint it myself, so I've decided that sometimes being a considerate spouse means knowing when to keep your mouth shut. That's just what I'm going to do. (Maybe the next time we have the tree guys here with their ladder truck I'll ask them if they might consider doing it.)
The shutters look nice, Bonnie. And your act of silence about that side of the house is a sign of a long, happy marriage ;) You know, as I've been driving around town, I've noticed that more and more work on homes is being done from those lift things. Maybe they rent them somewhere? Ladders are so hazardous.
ReplyDeleteI rather like the blue, but it *is* my favorite color, so that's no surprise. I think you are wise not to mention that one sill. Maybe he won't even notice!
ReplyDeleteI think the shutters look good, Bonny, and if you are anything like me, after a short period of time you won't even notice them. And such a wise choice to not mention the red sill! As Valerie said, a sign of a long happy marriage. I find myself not mentioning a lot of things these days - LOL. And I bet my husband does as well, IF he even notices anything.
ReplyDeleteOh, yep. Sometimes it's best all around (and certainly safer) to just . . . let things be. (High ladder antics have been forbidden here at our house now. At a certain point, high ladders just bring too much risk. . . ) And I think the shutters look stunning, Bonny. Really, really cheering and welcoming. XO

ReplyDeleteSometimes I'm really glad that Dale is afraid of heights because it means there are no high ladder antics over here! And if we need something handled that requires such, we hire out! I love the blue shutters.
ReplyDeleteWe have a walk-out basement, so the 2nd story window in the back is like a 3rd story and the gable/attic even higher. Luckily, most of the 2nd story windows on that side are accessible from a wrap-around porch roof. When we repainted our house many years ago, Rusty did all that himself with ladders & scaffolding, but no more. Last time we needed paint, we hired it out (and Rusty is loathe to pay money for things that he can do himself... but also realizes that he's not a spring chicken anymore). I love the blue shutters a lot more than I thought I would! I'm with you on the green, though, that's a combo that my grandparents always had at their house (so purely sentimental).

ReplyDeleteI like the blue shutters very much. Blue and white is a classic combination. You are a very wise woman. Tall ladders bring too much risk. The older we get the less I like my husband on even a short step ladder.
