Friday Letters

Today I take my virtual fountain pen in hand to write about a disappointment, an update, a note to myself, and an opinion. Let's open the mail ...

Dear Cupcake,

John went to work for a big staff meeting this week. It was billed as an important one, where lots of necessary information would be shared (it was not). He attended the meeting from his office via Microsoft Teams, as did most of the other staff members. This seemed silly to me, as this could have been done just as easily from home, but then he wouldn't have been able to bring me a cupcake.

When the meeting was over, the manager announced that there were cupcakes in the break room. John heard what sounded like a stampede in the hall, so he cautiously went to the break room to see what was up. When the feeding frenzy was over, there were a few cupcakes left, and he was kind enough to bring one home for me.

It looked delicious, enclosed in its own special package, and I resisted gobbling it down right away. I thought about eating it for breakfast the next day but decided to wait until after dinner. The smell of chocolate was powerful when I opened the package, and I reverently removed it from its container, expecting deliciousness. But ... after the first bite, all I tasted was disappointment. The second and third bites were the same, then I asked John to taste it. We were both surprised to find that it had little to no taste. The whipped cream was a little sweet, but that was it. Sorry cupcake, but just like the meeting, you were all style, no substance, and quite a disappointment.

Dear Whirlpool,

You may remember this picture from a few weeks ago, the dryer whose drum would not turn due to a broken belt. Now it looks like this.

You may not be able to tell from the picture but it's fixed. I would have taken photos during the repair, but I was holding the flashlight with one hand and the dryer drum with the other. John said it would be a simple 10-minute, job, and he was almost right. It actually took 25 minutes, but no swear words were uttered or even necessary. I call that a win!

======

Dear Bonny,

I know you've started going through closets and cupboards in MD, making a pile of things to take to Goodwill. Remember this picture in the future! When you see bed steps at a yard sale for $5 and think they are cute, just walk away. When you find an abandoned Spiderman fishing pole along the stream, leave it there. Most importantly, when you think "I could use a new shirt/pair of pants/jacket" remember that garbage bag full of clothes that you longer need. It's a small house but you've still managed to collect far too much stuff in it.

======

To the Supreme Court,

Please make the right decision. Roe has been the law for 48 years, so uphold precedent and remember that all women deserve legal access to every aspect of healthcare.

======

I wish you a lovely weekend with good-tasting cupcakes, appliances working as they should, your extra stuff cleaned out, and good decisions.

  1. Amazing how easy it is to collect "things." I make piles all the time...some of those piles are still sitting in our office room which is just one of the tings making me crazy this week! Glad your dryer is fixed and I sure hope you get a tasty cupcake soon!!

  2. I have been disappointed by cupcakes many times -- ironically, most of them have been from cupcake-only bakeries. I'll stick with the not-so-fancy ones from the supermarket, thanks.

    Looking at your pile of stuff to donate, I am thinking that there are some people out there who are going to be delighted to find what you're getting rid of. I hope future Bonny remembers not to pick up more stuff but present Bonny feels good about giving new life to what she no longer needs.

    And yes, so many times, on your letter to SCOTUS!

  3. As always, excellent letters, Bonny. (Especially that last one. . . ) I am so glad to see your Very Happy Dryer! Bravo to you and John for gittin'-'r'-dun! And I often find that cupcakes - and especially fancy ones - are disappointing. So much fluff, so little substance. (Just like corporate meetings . . . . ) Have a great weekend! XO

  4. Great letters although I don't have a ton of hope for that last one. I agree with Kym on the fancy cupcakes. They look gorgeous but never taste as good as you expect them to!

  5. Bonny, what a great pile of letters! I enjoy Friday letters a great deal. Very glad for you and John that you were able to fix the dryer; that feels so good, doesn't it? I find almost all bought bakery items are not worth the calories. I am _still_ attempting to rid my house of accumulated stuff. It's endless and tiring, but a worthy activity. Where does all this stuff come from? I think a lot of letters need to go to the SCOTUS. Can we do that? I am trying, with no cooperation from the news outlets, not to think about it since we won't learn what they decide until June of next year. It seems most of our government is out of touch with what the majority of the people want these days. On a lighter note, Happy Friday and have a wonderful weekend.

  6. I have zero hope on that last one... less than zero actually, I am surprised the hacks did not jump in and say "lets overturn it today!"

    But the best letter... that smiling dryer! Yahoo! Yay John! (and a bigger yay to the flashlight drum holder! Well done you!)

  8. Your letter to SCOTUS is excellent and I'm trying to cling to a little bit of hope for women in our country.
    I'm experienced the same disappointment with fancy bakery cupcakes, they look great and lack flavor.
    Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. It will be a long wait for the SCOTUS decision, but I feel like I need to expect the worst and hope for the best. I know I can bake cupcakes that taste better than the one I had, and I might just do that this weekend! Have a wonderful weekend, Debbie!

  9. Bonny, I googled whether or not we can write to the SCOTUS, and we can! There doesn't appear to be any write in campaign organized as yet. Maybe we should start one! I thought this article was interesting.

  10. Darn, if it wasn't such a long drive to Maryland... I am still on the look-out for bed steps! For now, I've borrowed the little step stool that the kids use in the bathroom (that Rusty made for KATE!).

  11. There is nothing worse than cupcake anticipation dashed by a tragic turn of events. I will give it 5 stars for pretty.

  12. Well rats. Most of the time I find that home baked cupcakes are better than the fancy ones sold in shops. Personally I am a fan of real butter and good quality vanilla. Hooray for a fixed dryer. The Supreme Court case is upsetting. Good thing we have knitting.

  13. Three cheers for a fixed dryer and a good decision (which I doubt is coming). Happy Weekend!

  14. I ate a very good tasting apple fritter while reading about your sad cupcake! I hope that is the last sad cupcake you eat!!
