Three on Thursday

Joining Carole and friends for Three on Thursday, today with three books that I'm looking forward to. I was searching for a good audio book after I finished The Great Believers, and it seemed that all I could find were books that wouldn't be published until later in the fall. I figured I might as well get a blog post out of them (and did finally settle on The Lager Queen of Minnesota).

It's just a little over a month until The Testaments is published, Margaret Atwood's sequel to The Handmaid's Tale. I'm really looking forward to this, and also a little afraid. The Handmaid's Tale is dystopia, but becoming reality, so this book is bound to be disturbing. Somehow the back cover gives me a little hope.

Bill Bryson has a new book coming out on October 15th, The Body. I love his attention to detail, even minutiae, so I'm betting this will be one of my favorites. As much as I enjoy his books, I like his voice even more, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he himself will narrate the 17-hour audio book.

Lastly is False Value, the eighth entry in the Rivers of London series that Ryan and I read together. It's urban fantasy, complete with wizards, magic, ghosts, and evil, but it's really fun. Of course, I've forgotten what went on in the seventh book, but this one won't be published until November, so there is plenty of time for a re-read.

What are you looking forward to reading this fall?

Head on over to Carole's for more Three on Thursday thoughts.

  1. Thanks, Bonny! I don't know how I missed The Testaments coming out. I immediately hopped over to my library and put it on hold, but I am #8, so it will be a while. I loved the original book, and I love the series on Hulu. I also requested that they buy The Body. I just started Chances Are, but I am not far enough into it to know if I like it or not. I like all of Richard Russo's other books.

  3. Well... The Lager Queen of Minnesota is now on my list, as is Kitchens of the Great Midwest (how have I never read that before?).

  4. Your three books sound interesting. I am catching up on the Ruth Galloway mystery series. I was just wondering why I don't make a fall list the way I made a summer reading list. Hmm? Lab Girl is next up for me.

  6. I reread The Handmaid's Tale for my Bingo card this summer so I'm ready for the sequel but also nervous about it! You are right about the back cover, though, I hadn't noticed that before. The Lager Queen of Minnesota is also on my list of books to read.

  7. I'm really looking forward to the Handmaid's Tale sequel. Given how much reality is reflecting fiction, I'm hoping that there's a hopeful resolution to the story.

  8. I bet the Bill Bryson book is great! I love his style. I'm not on hold for the Lager Queen (#60!!!). I realy want to start reading some of the books on my various shelves that I haven't read yet.

  9. I'm going to hold off on the sequel to the Handmaid's Tale. . . When I first read that book (when it first came out, all those years ago), it creeped me out like no other book before or since. I am still haunted. Couldn't watch the TV show. Haven't re-read. Don't think I can stand the sequel. . . But. I am very much looking forward to reading The Lager Queen of Minnesota!

  10. I'm reading the first book in that series! So far so good. Now the Atwood book will be good no matter what, I thoroughly enjoyed Handmaid's Tale.

  11. I don't think I can read Testaments. I read The Handmaid's Tale years ago when it first came out and I was so disturbed by it that I didn't sleep for nights. I'm still disturbed by it, I couldn't watch the TV series and I don't even want to think about it!
There are a lot of good books coming out this fall, but I'm looking forward to reading Inland, which comes out next week. I'm #6 on the hold list in our library system, so I shouldn't have to wait too long!

    1. I couldn't watch the TV series, and since I have The Testaments on hold at the library, I'll have to see if I can read it. Handmaid's Tale was very disturbing, and this sequel might just be too much for me also. I read a pre-publication copy of Inland, and thought it was very good. Not disturbing at all, just wonderful writing and a great story. I hope you don't have to wait long!

  13. I feel exactly as Kym and Debbie do. I just can't go there. The Body sounds very good as does The Lager Queen (which I had not heard of).

  14. The new Atwood novel was all over the bookstore windows in Bristol. Like a few others, I find Handmaid's Tale startling close to reality and I haven't been able to get up the nerve to watch the Hulu series. But I definitely plan to re-listen (Claire Danes narrates the audio) and read (unless Claire narrates the audio and then I'll probably listen) Testatments. I'm excited about the new Louise Penny AND the Ann Cleeves that you've already read!
