Beat the Heat

It was pretty warm here in Elkton this past weekend (just like it was for so many others).

We have central air here, but after days and days of hot, humid weather, I was ready to leave the air conditioning and do something fun. So what did I do?

One delicious thing we did was head to UDairy Creamery for dinner. It's an ice cream shop that makes and sells ice cream from the milk of the cows on the farm at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Delaware. That's a scoop of First State Cobbler, peach ice cream with a blueberry swirl and cinnamon crumble pieces. If you're anywhere near the University of Delaware campus, I highly recommend that you stop in for a treat.

I also visited the Elkton library, where I found some interesting sights. I patted the brass lion on the nose like so many others have. His paws look a bit out of perspective to me, but I do like his smile.

Does anyone remember Peter Max and his pop art from the 60s? I love these chairs because the upholstery looks like something he would have designed. Pretty wild for a library!

I was lucky enough to find a good book that had just been returned, which provided several chapters of pleasant reading once I was back home in the air conditioning.

And lastly, these two "old" guys cracked me up. They had a loud conversation about how when you get old you just can't take the heat like you used to. The guy on the right is only 61, but he was concerned because he was able to put a roof on last year when the temperature was in the low 90s, but he almost fell off a ladder on Friday when the temperature was only 95. The guy on the left is 72 and said that his doctor told him that senior citizens didn't do well in temperatures above 90, but he was still working outdoors, so he guessed he wasn't a senior citizen just yet. They argued, got louder and funnier for a good 10 minutes, and provided me with plenty of entertainment.

Hopefully it's cooler where you are today. We're only supposed to reach 88 degrees today with thunderstorms, so that might even feel downright comfortable.

  1. I think ice cream should be the required food to eat during a heatwave, and you were smart to treat yourself!

I'll be interested to hear how you like Where the Crawdads Sing. Everyone was raving about it, and I'll admit I was a little disappointed with it.

  2. good gracious 101 is a bit ridiculous!! I want to read that book but haven't got a copy as of yet (and I know I could get it at the library....). I have so many owned books to read so I'm ploughing through them. Are we old people now??

  3. I'll admit that it's been a bit of a shock to come home from Alaska -- where the air is cool and comfortable! I think ice cream and a lovely excursion to the library are great ways to beat the heat! My book group has selected that book for next year. (I'm hoping it will be more readily available by the time I want a copy!) XO

  4. That ice cream! Oh my! It sounds heavenly - and would even be good for breakfast, I am thinking!

    Stay cool and dry!

  5. That busy chair fabric is all about disguising stains - I can promise you! :)

  6. We hit 90 degrees which is hot for the PNW where few people have air conditioning but it should be back in the 80’s now. Hot or cold, a few hours at the library sounds like a great idea.

  7. Ice cream and the library are great choices for a hot day. My friend had a Barnes & Noble gift certificate, so we traveled to Champaign/Urbana & spent a fair amount of time browsing & shopping for books and bookish things. We drove through a horrific storm that did nothing to cool things off. Relief is coming today!

    1. We also had a torrential storm last night, but that only served to increase the humidity. I hope you experience the real relief today (and us, too)!

  8. Well shoot, that ice cream sounds perfect! I'll have to ask my nephew about that since he's a prof at the University. I like the lion and those chairs - crazy wild!! I'm interested to hear your take on Crawdads. I thought it was ok (kind of a beachy read maybe), but like SJ above, I was a bit disappointed after all the hoopla about it.

  9. We had ice cream in the heat this weekend, too! Libraries are FULL of conversations like the one you captured, it definitely keeps the librarians entertained!

  10. I ended up eating ice cream in the house last night! We actually spent some time in the afternoons outside in the heat. The hot season is so short these days I need to soak it in. I love the lion in the library and glad to see you got Crawdads...I'm pretty close to getting it from the on-hold world!

  11. It's been hot here, but the next few days should 100 or over (with single digit humidity-a blast furnace). I am shocked it is so hot on the east coast. Thank goodness for a/c and ice cream (and cool libraries). Signs of old age-hard of hearing and completely unaware of ones surroundings. LOL

  12. Yum - that ice cream looks delicious. The conversation between the gents is priceless. I love the comment from the 72 year old about not being a senior citizen. Sunday brought us welcome heat relief in the form of rain. Today was very nice - summery but the temps and the humidity are down. I hope that kind of weather is headed your way.

  13. It was quite the shift for me to see hotter places up the east coast this weekend. I'm sorry. I think Georgia is way better at air conditioning ... but looks like MD/DE is coping. I can't remember the last time I had ice cream, but I saw so many scoops on Instagram this weekend ... yours sounds the best!

  14. Did you see any yarn at the ice cream shop. They also sell wool from the sheep at the school and it felts up wonderfully. Go Blue Hens!

    1. I did not see any wool at the ice cream shop, but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for it!
