Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for a long-awaited Inauguration Day and Unraveled Wednesday, with some more teeth on the Hitchhiker. It doesn't look a lot different, just a bit longer, so I'll just show you a photo of my turtle progress marker in action. He's slowly but surely climbing up the edge. I'm wondering if he might be able to move a little bit faster as I hope to be less prone to just clutching my knitting in horror after the inauguration tomorrow. I have 36 teeth completed and ~ 23 teeth or so to go, or until I run out of yarn. With 29 days before Valentine's Day, I should be done in plenty of time to meet my self-imposed deadline.

I read a wonderful book this week, Committed by Adam Stern. It's Dr. Stern's memoir during his four years of psychiatric residency at Harvard. It's also the story of his growth from an unsure first-year resident to becoming (somewhat) more sure of himself and his abilities to practice psychiatry. He also grows as a classmate, teacher, husband, and human being. There is a quote that really struck me:

I knew I would never be the version of the mythical Harvard psychiatrist that had existed in my mind four years earlier. I had seen too many examples of shared humanity among the patients and those trying to help them to be hung up on formalities. The space where that psychiatrist has once existed in my mind had been filled instead with hard-earned truths about what it means to connect to those people around you, to commit to them, and to purposefully keep moving forward.

Those are words that all of us can live by whether we are psychiatrists, patients, or simply average people trying to maintain our connections with others. I was lucky to receive a pre-publication copy, but I think it's well worth reading after the publication date in July of this year.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. What a cute progress marker! And the colors in this Hitchhiker are just so pretty Bonny. "Committed" sounds very interesting. I'm still reading mysteries and plugging along on the Yule Wave socks and the Heart Warmer cowl. Fun projects.

  2. I just love the colors in this Hitchhiker!

The book sounds really interesting and I'll be keeping my eye out for it. I'm hoping to finish up a pair of ankle socks today (just a toe to finish) and I started reading Transcendent Kingdom yesterday.

  3. Yay for that progress! I am about to immerse that skein for a lovely little soak. My goal is to get closer to the finish of my Autumn Forest so I can cast on my Hitchhiker! (Oh and I started Matt Haig's The Midnight Library yesterday!)

  4. How smart is that doctor to recognize and realize he had changed his perspective? Enjoy your Hitchhiker knitting today!

  5. That sounds like a very interesting book, Bonny. Love the quote. AND your charming little turtle, too. (I think a turtle stitch marker might make me knit faster. But I'm not sure.) I hope today is is full peace and hope -- with no occasion to grip our knitting tightly! XO

  6. Isn't it just the best thing when medical practitioners of any discipline put humanity ahead of formality? The book sounds like the documentation of an amazing journey.

Love the little turtle, you're in good company today. Happy Inauguration Day!

    1. I've had several interesting and soul-satisfying medical encounters lately (an er physician that reads poetry and took a few minutes to discuss it with me), so I'm maintaining hope for medicine and its practitioners.

  10. I am reading The Vanishing Half and not knitting. I am optimistic that after today my anxiety level will deflate and that I will be able to breathe more freely without clutching anything tightly! I am also hopeful that this will allow my focus to return, but we still have lots of problems in the US. I am tearful with joy that the page has been turned and integrity, empathy, and competence will be returned to our government. What a grand day for our country and for us as individuals. Love the turtle and the HH, Bonny.

  13. I love the turtle progress keeper. Could their be a better metaphor for hand-knitting? The hitchhiker colors are so happy and bright, just like Wednesday. It was quite a day. The book sounds quite interesting. The writer sounds like a very thoughtful person.
