Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.

I'm plugging along on my Match and Move. I had to rip out 40 rows because of a mistake I couldn't ignore, but during the re-knitting I learned something valuable. Last week when I was wondering whether these colors worked together or not, Kym left a helpful comment: "My advice whenever working with contrasting colors . . . give yourself plenty of "real estate" before you make a judgement. You really need to be able to see enough of the colors and how they work together before you decide whether they work or not." Once I had knit back to virgin yarn, I had proof; I do love these colors together and wonder what I was fussing about. While Kym didn't actually state this as a law, so many others agreed with her and I've seen the evidence myself that I'm now declaring it Kym's Law of Contrasting Colors. :-)

While I love what I'm knitting, my reading is less inspired. I finished Raven Black and White Nights by Ann Cleeves and thought they were both decent three-star mysteries. I had watched a few episodes of Shetland on Netflix and decided I should read the books upon which the series is based before I watched any more. Then I stumbled upon Enchantress of Numbers on Overdrive and started listening with excitement and anticipation. I thought it was going to be historical fiction about Ada Lovelace but I'm well into the book and she hasn't even been born yet. So far, it's just about her crazy, dysfunctional parents (Anne Milbank and Lord Byron), which is not the story I had hoped for. I'm not sure how much longer I'll persevere with this, especially with some more promising books in my tbr queue. Find out next week!

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I pulled a Carole this week... I was cleaning out knitting bags and found a sock+ and thought, why haven't I finished these... ahhh, the issues of the ADD knitter! Hahahaha! Also, I am listening to Red Sparrow... and I am so hooked!

  2. I love the colors in your Match & Move. It will be stunning! I had never heard of Ada Lovelace, but I've placed a hold on that book on Overdrive...I've got a wait, so I'll be curious to read your review. It sounds so good!

    1. I think Match & Move is a great pattern and can see why you knit four of them. I just took a look at them on ravelry and they are all wonderful. I'm nowhere near binding off yet, but thank you for your helpful note on binding off without a bump!

  4. Oh, those colors are FABULOUS together!! I am still giving my arm/elbow a break and not knitting. Thankfully, there's plenty to sew and I use different muscles for that activity.

  7. I am "making" nothing via knitting. It is really tough to get to that knitting these days. I am reading about 4 books, which is a bad idea, but nothing is really grabbing me. I am currently sticking with Women of the Castle, and like you, it is nothing like I thought it would be. But it is all right, and I plan to stick with it to the end. Hopefully something else will grab me after I after finished it.

    1. Oh, and I love your match and move. Kym makes an excellent point. A wider field is always better for making those decisions. Glad you decided you liked it!

  8. I LOVE the way your Match and Move is turning out. Those colors look fabulous together. (And I am pleased as punch that you gave me a "law." It makes me giggle.) I have been in a real book slump lately. Marriage of Opposites? Okay. The Seventh Function of Launguage? Too "smart" for me. Pachinko? Major yawn. Miss Burma? Not so much. I actually turned to an Ann Cleeves just because she's dependable -- and doesn't use the third-person omniscient narrator. (Because I can't bear to read one more book written from that point of view.)

(As you can see, my reading has made me grumpy.) (Or maybe it's the wallpaper removal situation.)

  9. The Match and Move is looking good. The colors look great together. I like the way you and Kym think. I am thoroughly enjoying the old-fashioned, The Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett. My sister suggested the audio versions of the Charles Lennox mystery series written by Charles Finch. They are average for Victorian mysteries with a dose of English history but they are available from my local library via Overdrive.

  10. I just read Eleanor Oliphant on your recommendation and enjoyed it very much! Thank you. Match and Move looks marvelous!! How great to have Kym's law to follow when we're knitting with multiple colors! Good laws make knitting easier!

  11. ahhh... that Kym is a smart woman - and I LOVE your two yarns together! (don't even get me started about the "meh" reading ... I DNF'd Signature of All Things today and I'm thinking of just giving books a break for a while).

  12. Lord Byron was Ada Lovelace's father? Srsly? Who knew? (I love Kym's Law!)
