Fun With Frost

It was dark and -4 degrees when I left the house very early this morning, so I was concentrating on not slipping on ice, not getting blown off course by the wind, and crossing my fingers that my car would start (success on all counts). Thankfully, there was enough light when I got home to notice and take some photos of the lovely and impressive frost formations we've got going on.

I wish that the sun had been in the correct position to provide a little sparkle, but the temperatures are predicted to drop even lower over the weekend, so these frosty feathers aren't going to be melting any time soon. Hopefully, I'll be able to take some photos with the sun behind them tomorrow or Sunday. If we're going to be locked in the deep freeze, I'm glad it's at least pretty.

  1. WOW! I have never seen such beautiful ice crystals. I assume all of them are on your windows. Do you know why they have formed in such a way? I could sit for a long time in fascination if they were on my windows. It has warmed up here, finally, although still cold, but it got above freezing today, and I took my dogs for a walk, and we blew the stink of cabin fever off our brows. It felt good. I will be sending warm thoughts to you this weekend of steaming stews, hot tea, and lots of great books and knitting. Stay toasty, Bonny!

    1. They are on the windows of kind of an air lock extension for our front door. It's completely uninsulated but with windows on three sides, so it warms up a tiny bit if there is sun and then gets really cold at night so the conditions are perfect for ice formation. I don't know why the formations are in lines and feathers, but they do fascinate me! We're supposed to get above freezing by the end of next week, and that is going to feel wonderfully warm after today's high of 6. Enjoy your warm up and I hope it lasts!

  3. We have similar frost on the inside of our mudroom door. It's damn cold out there today!

  5. So beautiful and elegant, but...wow! That shows just how cold you are. We haven't had ice form on windows for years, although I did see a similar ice on a parked car the other day. The ice feathers are lovely. Sending warm wishes to you. I hope you can stay in where it is warm, safe, with good books and knitting (and a hot toddy?).

  7. you captured the chill with your photos! I think it was a tad warmer today but who knows maybe I'm imagining it. Frodo isn't keen on anything under 20 degrees, it's too cold.

  8. These photos are stunning, sadly they only happen when it is crazy cold. I hope you stayed warm and safe this weekend!

  9. I think winter is the most beautiful season, as long as there is enough snow, it's cold enough for it to pile up and not melt into slush piles, and my car starts. Yeah, I'm picky, I know.
