The Perfect Word

I've found the perfect word for 2018, and it came from Lene Alve, a wonderfully creative writer from Finland. She blogs about her life, knitting, crochet, food, reindeer, knitted cats and their wardrobes, and each post is full of beautiful words and photos. She wrote every day during the Christmas season, and it was a joy to wake up and know that there was going to be one of her lovely posts waiting to be read.

It was this one that provided me with my word - Enough. As soon as I read it, I knew that this was the word to guide me throughout 2018. Not in the angry sense of yelling "I've just had enough!" and stomping away, but more in the way of recognizing that you have tried enough, done enough, eaten and drunk enough, gratitude that you have enough of what you need, you are enough.

The Christmas season often makes me feel that I've never done quite enough. This is a completely internal thing, and not something anyone else has ever made me feel or forced upon me. It can be almost paralyzing at times, to the point that I may not do enough because I'm frozen by my inability to do more. It may sound silly, but enough spoke to me, and I'm glad to begin 2018 with a lovely freeing feeling of enough.

  1. A wonderful choice of a word Bonny! My "one word" this year is Explore, but I will be adding Enough to my journal notes.

  2. This word is powerful, Bonny! I love the positive context you are using it (because, I am in the stomp around, shouting 'I've had enough!!' camp). Thank you for opening my eyes and seeing new possibilities - may this year be just that for you!

  3. I adore this word. It was my OLW a few years ago and it has never left me. It is a wonderful guiding word.
And thanks for the new blog to visit.

  4. I’m thinking, that word is so right.
Though, I was listening to a radio station of top-ten Beatle’s songs, one really struck me as the right one (moreso a phrase) it is “let-it-be”. It allows patience, gratitude, compromise and “enough” to be included.
Christmas is a full season, and I reveled in this last one but it also was quite enough and now I long for quietude.
    Happy new year.

  5. Yes!! I totally understand what you are saying. Your post sums up what happened to me a few years ago (after major surgery) and that is the year I said I had enough. That moment changed my life. Enough is a freeing word, Bonny. Thank you for your post and for your amazing pictures. (Lene is a treasure, too.)

  9. Excellent word choice! I love her blog - a few years ago, she wrote a Christmas Eve post which was one of the most beautiful things I've ever read anywhere.

    On to 2018!

  10. I love this word. There's also Kon-Mari/Swedish Death Cleaning shade of meaning for me. I've been seeing the hashtag #NoBuy2018 and while I'm not moved enough to pledge not to buy stuff, I'm reminded that many times, I actually have enough already.

  14. This is a profound word, Bonny. It applies to everything! I love it. I may have to use it next year. I, too, often feel that I am not enough, that I have not done enough, but you know, we are perfectly imperfect, so we are always enough. Thanks for making me think about this.

    1. Feeling like you haven't done enough is a difficult feeling and I really puzzle over where that comes from. I can't blame anyone else, but I hope that a year spent thinking about "Enough" will help me convince myself (and you, too)!
