Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, today with what I hope is a penultimate Hitchhiker photo and what will come next. Last week when I was excited about Vicki's Nightshift KAL, I was all set to abandon the Hitchhiker and cast on my Nightshift as soon as I got to NJ and tore open my yarn package. I thought about it and decided it was better to finish the Hitchhiker first, especially because this one might be for Ryan. So that's what I'm doing. There is one bright blue stripe, I've just started a brownish-grey stripe, and next will be a bright pink stripe before I finish. I haven't been sleeping well, so I fell asleep at 8:30 in the middle of knitting last night. I'm not 100% sure about the stripes, but I think I'll chat with Ryan and get his expert opinion. I trust him in all matters of yarn and color, so I'll be interested to hear his thoughts. That's one of the nice things about knitting; it can easily be unraveled.

I did get my Nightshift yarn, and was initially a little disappointed when I opened the package. The purple yarn looked more like cobalt blue on the website photo and my monitor, so that's what I had been hoping for. I don't dislike purple; I just like bright blue a bit better, but I will cast on soon and see what it all really looks like when it's knit in the pattern.

I've had the pleasure of finishing two wonderful books and starting another (hopefully) wonderful one this week. My first finish was This Is Happiness, and I will definitely be reading more written by Niall Williams. The second book I read was Late Migrations, and I will read anything by Margaret Renkl. I think I've read most of her NYT pieces and followed her on Instagram, but I still want more. I borrowed Late Migrations from the library, but I will be purchasing my own copy so I can re-read it whenever I want to. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite books, and I'm very grateful to Vera for recommending it.

I've started The World That We Knew and based on your reviews, I've got a treat in store. I really want to read Apeirogon (thanks, Kat!) but my wait at the library looks like it will be two months or more. I have a feeling Imay just give in and buy it soon. Stay tuned next week and see what happens with the Hitchhiker, whether I've cast on for Nightshift, and if I'm reading Apeirogon!

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. love that blue stripe ( you are so good at the variations of the hitchhiker) I might be adding a contrasting color to make my current hitchhiker bigger. However, it will be from what is in stash, no buying!!

  2. Love the stripe in the Hitchhiker - what a great idea Bonny! I can't wait to see this one finished and I do really like your colors for your Nightshift. So glad you enjoyed Late Migrations. I, too, borrowed it from my library and plan to buy my own copy. She is a marvelous writer!

  3. I am moving up on the waitlist for Margaret's book and still impatient to get it! I love that blue stripe as well! (and I think you should withhold judgement until you have begun knitting your Night Shade... it is curious how the colors change knit in the pattern!)

  4. That's a great looking hitchhiker! So if your NightShift only 2 different skeins? I picked 6 different skeins and I hope it won't be too much. I want them to blend and pop at the same time.

  5. So many cliffhangers here! :-) I can't wait to see what you do with the Hitchhiker. I really think that the Night Shift is going to be wonderful.

  6. I am sorry you haven't been sleeping well -- falling asleep in the middle of knitting is not ideal!

I think once you start knitting your Nightshift, you're going to be surprised by the colors. I've never failed to be surprised how different colors can appear when they're combined with others. And if you really don't like it, you can always rip and restart with something else!

  7. Perfect post, combining knitting and books! I haven't been sleeping well, either. I think it is a combination of factors, not least of which is all the unsettling things going on. I have been doing a lot of "comfort" reading which does not demand a lot of focus or energy. I will have to check out your books, and thanks for telling us about them. I think your (Ryan's?) hitchhiker is fabulous with that stripe, and you have shown great restraint in holding off on starting a new project. That's hard to do when you are excited about a new pattern!

  8. OH, and I meant to ask you, did you read this? I guess I really do need to look for that book. I loved this editorial of hers.

  9. so much lovely knitting in process and in store ... and I'm so glad you loved Late Migrations. I've still got a long wait at the library and a tall stack of must-reads for bookclubs. I can be patient!

  10. I love the hitchhiker with it's bright blue stripe. It looks bright and cheerful and like Spring. There is something about the home stretch of projects that kicks me into gear. I can dawdle and set things aside forever but if the end is in sight - I am on it. I had not heard of This is Happiness but have added it to my list. My sister gave me a copy of Late Migrations for my birthday and it is a beautiful book.

  11. I really like the stripes in your Hitchhiker, Bonny. I think you'll need to wrap it around your neck to see the full glory of those stripes, though! Sometimes it's hard to judge when you're looking at it on the needle like that. The Night Shift pattern really mixes up the colors of the yarn in unexpected ways -- so, again, give yourself some "real estate" before you make the final call on your colors. When I was knitting mine, there was one color I thought I'd really hate, and one I thought I'd really love. . . and I bet you can guess where I'm going with this . . . because, in the end, it was completely the opposite! Have fun exploring with color. XO

  13. I like your idea of stripes int he Hitchhiker and will be interested to see how they work out. Nightshift is going to be fabulous and I hope you like the colors well enough to watch them unfold in the pattern.
I just finished Apeirogon (audio version) and loved the way the story is told, through overlapping stories, events, words, and thoughts, which was a masterful way of telling this story, one few people know or understand.
