Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with still more expressive dishcloths and more of the same old Hitchhiker.

I know I said I was done knitting these, but after receiving two more requests for WTF dishcloths I couldn't bear to disappoint the family members that seem to love them. They are a quick knit, and perfect car knitting. I can knit one on the trip from NJ to MD, and it keeps me from clutching the armrest in fear as the traffic whizzes past us at 95 mph on Route 95, and gives me a sense of accomplishment that I haven't just wasted a couple of hours on the road.

The Sunset Hitchhiker is proceeding slowly but surely. It's nice to see it stretched out on my MD neighbor's fence, and it was about time I acquainted these neighbors with taking photos of knitting. I started trying to attach the dishcloths to the fence with clothespins, and Ralph (my neighbor) wondered what I was doing. He responded to my explanation with a resounding "Cool! We could use one or two of those dishcloths!", so I guess the price of using his fence is knitting yet a few more. It amuses me how much people seem to like them, but maybe we're all in a WTF kind of mood.

I read The Last Hours last week, but for me, it was a book with one-dimensional characters and no real plot. It's fiction about the spread of bubonic plague in England, and while I can respect the amount of research that Minette Walters did, I found some of the ideas that the stereotypical characters held were strangely out of place. It was really just a fill-in book while I eagerly waited to check out The Splendid and the Vile, but now I've got it downloaded and have started listening. So far, it's as good as I had hoped.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. More dishcloths! I'm so glad everyone is loving them :)

And happy to hear that you're enjoying The Splendid and the Vile. I tried reading it, but literally fell asleep every time. I have a hold on an audio copy!

    1. I only listened to The Splendid and the Vile a bit yesterday while I was taking my walk, but when I tried listening last night I fell asleep also. We'll see how this goes!

  4. I always feel like dishcloths are a frivolous thing to knit, but yet I use them every day, which is definitely more often than I use any other knit item. And if it helps you get through the car trip, even better!

  5. If you are not careful, you will be knitting those dishcloths for a very long time, Bonny! But then again, I am hopeful that we are all going to get to the place where they are a collector's item, a reminder of darker times. (I hope my optimism lasts for at least a few hours!) The Hitchhiker is looking lovely. I am awaiting my Portuguese knitting book to see if I can knit with another method that will not aggravate my hands. Wish me luck!

  9. I have to laugh. Your neighbor is way wiser than my neighbor in Chicago. Your neighbor will get dishcloths.
My neighbor, who sorry, we learned over the years was a bit socially awkward, seriously asked me why I would knit a sock when I could buy tube socks for a dollar......

  11. I have the Splendid and the Vile to read soon, too. I broke down and purchased it with Audible credits, so I have no deadline. And now that my library has opened again, all my holds have come in at once . . . Feast or famine! I love your Hitchhiker, and I love your dishclothes, too! I can see why they're in high demand!!!

  12. Those dishcloths are such a timely statement (and I hear you about knitting in the car ... there are a few folks whose driving terrifies me and if I just keep my head down and attention focused on the knitting, I'm ok). I'm looking forward to Splendid and the Vile; hope it's as good as Garden of Beasts.

  13. It's mostly from Rusty's driving that knitting distracts me!! ;)

  14. The hitchhiker looks lovely. The dish cloths are fun - great colors. You might be busy for quite some time with them. I look forward to a time when 2020 is a memory in the rearview mirror. I sent my son a copy of The Splendid and the Vile for Father's Day. He enjoys reading about WW2 so I hope he likes it. I think Larsen is a good writer. Dead Wake was the last of his books I read.
