Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with some expressive dishcloths and a Hitchhiker. When Kym posted her sweet and sour knitting, I was smitten by both of them. I don't have the patience for the sweet little house now, but boy did those sour F*** 2020 dishcloths speak to me. So I knit some of my own and have sent them to friends and family that are also feeling a bit sour towards the way 2020 has unfolded so far.

It’s nothing personal, 2020, but your poor treatment of friends and family that I love with your Coronavirus, wood-stacking accidents, bleeding head lacerations, broken arms, and multiple lost jobs just pisses me off. These dishcloths say just what
I feel.

They are quick to knit, practical, and made me feel a bit better. Sometimes F*** is the most appropriate expletive for the situation, even if John was surprised that I was knitting such "offensive dishcloths"! (We've been married for 39 years, so I'm kind of proud that I can still surprise him.)

Both my knitting and my mental state have relaxed a bit, and I'm back to working on my sunset Hitchhiker. Since it's now summer, I'm spending more time outside (weeding, mowing, walking, and maybe playing Animal Crossing and Overcooked with Ryan) so knitting is taking a back seat. But I still fit in at least 15 minutes each day and I try and do at least one tooth/day. There will be a new baby boy in the family in late September, so I need to finish this Hitchhiker and start some baby knitting.

My reading is kind of scattered and all over the place, but I've got lots of different books going for different situations. Usually, three at one time is my limit, but I've got some real books, a book of poetry, one on Kindle, and a couple of audiobooks. After George Floyd's death murder, it felt imperative that I read How to Be an Antiracist, so I am listening to it on my way down to MD today to mow.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I'm glad to see you're finding comfort in knitting and reading again! Those dishcloths are perfect - exactly what we all need to scream every now and then. I thought 2016 was the worst it could get. I was wrong.

    1. Thanks,Katie! I do love those dishcloths and need to knit one for myself. I've learned to not think 2016 and the administration were the worst, because they always manage to surprise me with new lows.

  2. I can tell from your tone (which is hard to get in writing, I know) that you're feeling a bit better, and for that, I'm thankful.

If knitting those "offensive" dishcloths is helping, then knit as many as possible! There is so much going on right now to be angry about, and better to get it out in a constructive way than keep it in.

I'm embarrassed to say that I have not yet started my Hitchhiker. My yarn is all wound and just sitting there, mocking me! But I have three other WIPs plus my crochet blanket plus spinning, so I figure even if I did cast it on now, it wouldn't see much attention.

I am currently reading "A Woman of No Importance," a biography of an American woman who wanted to help the war effort in WWII and went to work for the British SOE. It's fascinating but not exactly a quick read. I'd like to get through it soon, though, because I have "How to Be an Antiracist" waiting for me.

  3. I love Kendi's writing! I imagine he is an incredible teacher and I felt like I was in class listening to him! (and those fuck 2020 dish cloths are awesome!) I need to get some cotton and knit some!

Also... thank you for inspiring me to be curious about AC and yes, it now is the best "I need to forget about life" thing ever! (now I need to figure out what is Overcooked! lol)

  6. Glad you are feeling somewhat better Bonny. These are tough, awful, horrendous times for sure. We all have to help each other get through this "dumpster fire" - love that phrase from Carole! But boy did you pick a HOT day for mowing - I think it is supposed to hit 90 here!! Love the 2020 dishcloths.

  7. I'm so glad you're feeling a bit better, Bonny, and also that those "offensive dishcloths" helped a little! (And my daughter has found and shipped a Switch to me, complete with AC. I should have it next week . . . and I can't wait.) :-)

  9. I am so glad you are feeling better, Bonny. Love the dishcloths, and it's a hoot that your husband was shocked! I would say that I can't wait for this year to be over, but there is no guarantee that 2021 will be better, so I am not tempting fate. I do have a lot of hope, though, and I hope you do as well. Hold fast!

  15. If those dishcloths make you feel better, the more the merrier. You do need one for yourself. Enjoy the gardening. I find digging in the dirt and yanking on weeds to be cathartic. That is a summer hitchhiker for sure. Congratulations on surprising your husband. That is no mean feat.

  16. Your knitting those dish clothes makes ME feel better! If my hands could handle cotton I'd be joining you as I think I need one or two. I read 'How to be Antiracist' last year and I believe it is required reading (as is Between the World and Me) (and so many other books on race). Gardening, or just taking a walk, is the place I find peace of mind.
