It's a Jungle Out There

John is a gardener who believes in using every last inch of space ... and then some. It's really his garden; I just start the seeds, help plant and pick, and deal with all of the produce. :-) I did mention to him when we planted these tomatoes that I thought they were a bit close to each other. Then I said it again (and again), suggesting that we really did need to thin the tomato plants, but there was no convincing him.

So I hereby state unconditionally that any tomatoes I can't see or reach are not my responsibility.

There are about 20 tomato plants in there, but I can only get to a very few on the outer edge There is really no walkway between the Brussels sprouts, the overgrown zucchini, cucumbers, melons, and the tomatoes.

I can see many, many green tomatoes on just a few plants around the perimeter, and when these begin to ripen we will be inundated. John recently bought a new truck, and it's a good thing because we will need to fill the bed with all the extra tomatoes so he can give them away at work.

It really is a jungle out there! Any bets on whether I can manage not to say I told you so?

  1. Oh my goodness, jungle is really no exaggeration! You're going to be inundated with produce! If you can't find enough people to give extra away to, might I suggest seeing if there's a local food pantry that will take some?

  2. Oh, I wish I was living nearby. I would come and brave the jungle for you for some home-grown tomatoes. Your garden looks fabulous. I hope you have a wonderful week, Bonny. We are just trying to stay dry down here, and we figure if we do it is a win.

  3. Oh... before I even got to the end of the post, I was thinking there is certainly an "I told you so" in here somewhere! LOL

And, I think YOU absolutely should be saying that! That really is a jungle and then some!

  5. Your garden is amazing! I have garden envy. Honestly, our tomatoes have never looked that good in any year! If only you could pass a few ripe tomatoes through the screen! Between Smith's schedule and overcommitment in other areas of life, my being unable to help and the very unfavorable spring weather, we have nothing of note in the garden. We may just end up with garlic and potatoes, maybe a few beans. This is not our year.

  6. One time when we had our tomatoes planted to close together they all got some disease - powdery mildew, maybe? I hope yours all ripen successfully! I wish I lived closer, I'd be helping myself to your extras!

  7. It is indeed a jungle and I can't believe I wish I were there to help harvest. Homegrown tomatoes are a particular weakness. and yep, I think an "I told you so" is in order. or at least a "your turn to harvest"?

  8. I wouldn't hazard a guess about the "I told you so." I am not very good at that myself. What a wonderful garden. If all those plants produce mature fruit and veggies you are going to be "eating off the fat of the land." I have lots of green tomatoes and am hoping the squirrels leave them alone. I much prefer the flavor of my canned tomatoes and tomato sauce.

  9. Oh my gosh - it IS a jungle Bonny! I'm thinking John needs to do some harvesting too. And those green tomatoes are getting me thinking about fried green tomatoes!! And, when they ripen, a nice big BLT. YUM!!!
