Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.
My Fading Tardis Hitchhiker traveled with me to Colorado and was perfect plane knitting. I also took it to visit the Math building and the pendulum in the Engineering building at CSU.
It's coming along, but I also got distracted by my new, shiny yarn and started a pair of fingerless mitts on the way home. My new yarn bowl is the perfect accessory.
My reading slowed way down in Colorado and I've been busy with work since I got home. I did manage to finish
Turtles All the Way Down. It was an interesting portrayal of a character with OCD, but it made me finally admit that I really am too old for most YA fiction. Even if it's well-written, as this was, I still miss the details, in-depth characterizations, and detailed, well-developed plots of most adult literary fiction. There is too much telling and not enough showing for me in YA (but to be fair, I'm decades past the target audience!) I don't currently have a must-read book in hand, but I'm content to knit and let my next great read find me.
What are you making and reading?
love your hitchhiker and the places you took it to :) I like YA but I do a lot of eye rolling.... Might be my age as well. My reading has suffered a lot in October because all I can think about is my back! I have a feeling November is going to be much better :)
ReplyDeleteThe pendulum is one of my favorite things on CSU's campus! So glad your Hitchhiker got to watch it in action. :-) I stopped reading (most) YA several years ago. I'm glad it's there . . . but it's not for me (anymore). Those stripes are GREAT! Watching them "happen" would keep me entertained for row after row (after row).
ReplyDeleteYA books if well written are okay, but I agree with you that the general structure and depth of characters specific for that age group are not for me. (Though if the creativity is there I tend to quick read it and enjoy as it goes, especially if it is something my granddaughter would like when she gets older.)
ReplyDeleteWe took a quick trip this last weekend, and since my hubbie drove, I experimented on “mitts” or short wrist-warmers for Xmas and got three sets started!
Reading is slow, as I can’t seem to find something that gets me entranced. At least there is a lot out there to explore.
Happy reading and knitting, onward!
Plenty of YA is well-written, but I think it's mainly the angsty, teenage stories with a bit of romance that remind me I'm no longer 16! Mitts are perfect as I like my fingers free to do things, but they still provide warmth. I bet we'll find excellent immersive reads soon enough - they always come along eventually!
DeleteI do still read YA, partly because I enjoy it and it's fast, and partly because of work. I definitely miss the depth of adult stuff, though, when I do. I'm knitting socks. What else is new?
ReplyDeleteThe last YA book I read was The Hate U Give and I thought it was on par with adult fiction, but usually I don't even bother with YA for the reasons you've stated. Your Hitchhiker is growing! Your current color obsession is my favorite (of course).
ReplyDeleteI love this line: "I'm content to knit and let my next great read find me." That is so perfect, and frequently both the knitting projects as well as books find me! (And, lots of those books find me via you!)
ReplyDeleteI don't read a lot of YA anymore, but I enjoyed it in the past. I just haven't run across any that interested me in a long time. I am reading My Absolute Darling, and it is quite intriguing but it also has that "watching a car wreck can't look away" vibe going on. It is very well written, but it is painful. Last night I put it down because I couldn't face what I thought was going to happen next. I am invested, so I will finish it. I took Forest Dark back to the library unfinished. I just couldn't force myself to continue. I am still slogging away on my coat, extremely slowly. I have had a lot of house demands lately, so I haven't had much time to read or knit. I am enjoying watching your knitting, Bonny! The stripes are extremely "crisp" looking. And your hitchhiker is growing steadily. That yarn bowl, what can I say? I want one!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for a great, immersive read also, but after spending too much time searching, I think I just have to be patient. I'll be interested in your thoughts on My Absolute Darling, as many people have the same thoughts. I just don't know if I want a painful (but still good!) book. Fall is a time for slowing down, and even if we've slowed down on reading, I bet something really good will come along soon!
DeleteI haven't read YA for at least a year myself. Though I did love We Were Liars! I'm like you...same knitting but unfortunately some of the same reading! Not enough time in the day!
ReplyDeleteI love your traveling Hitchiker and your mitts...such beautiful colors! I'm about halfway through The Ministry of Utmost Happiness and it is a slog, I'm already thinking about what to read next. I've started the last section of my niece's shawl, the rows are long, but not too many are left...I will have it done in plenty of time for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteLove your mitts and the growing hitchhiker. Both are so pretty! I'm giving up on 4.3.2.1. as it is putting me to sleep. Started The Professor and the Housekeeper last night and love it (hello! I'm a numbers freak).
ReplyDeleteI haven't read a YA book in quite some time; NTS: give it a try in 2018. I love your knitting bowl...it looks really great with the yarn. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteCheers~
Oh, that's such a lovely blue, and those stripes!!
ReplyDeleteI love what you call "shiny new yarn" I am constantly being tempted by this.
ReplyDeleteI try to read YA, but I rarely finish it. It's not just that it's YA, but there is a new Internet-feel to a lot of it. I'm an old fashioned reader, I guess.
I love the new yarn!
